On the plus side, horseplayers like us are receiving HIGHER payouts on our wagers than we did before. This is the result of legislation in Kentucky that was specifically designed to reduce the amount of the bettors' money that the tracks were allowed to stuff into their pockets.

On balance, I'll take the money and use a calculator.

Personally, I'd just like to have something to calculate. On another note, it was good to see Red Knight win. I think he labored a long time for that and good to see him go out a winner, if indeed he is retired after this. He always seems to run well at Kentucky Downs.

I think that the Ky Downs Turf Cup was a "win and you're in" race for the BC Turf. Having won a free entry into the BC Turf it will be very interesting to see whether Red Knight's connections choose to take a shot at it. I'm sure that it will be very tempting and something that they never expected from their homebred. They were hoping for him to reach $1 million in career earnings; today's win moved him waaaaaay over that hurdle.

Curious thing about the purses in today's KY Downs races. The Turf Cup was advertised as a $1 million race. however, when you look at the chart, it appears that the total paid out was only $694,180. I had expected that Red Knight's winner's share would be around $600,000, but it was only $317,130. That's a winner's share from a $550,000 race, not a $1 million race.
From the race chart:
Value of Race: $694,180 1st $317,130, 2nd $186,000, 3rd $51,150, 4th $46,500, 5th $27,900, 6th $10,000, 7th $10,000, 8th through 12th $10,000 each. Some of that represents payments to KY TD Development Fund eligible horses.

I think that the rest of the purse would have been paid out only if all runners had been eligible for payments from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund. As a NY bred, RK wasn't eligible.

So much for a so called $1 million race.

I've seen that happen in Canada from time to time. A horse might finish third and get more money than the horse that finished second.

We were fortunate that our contest races all went off without a hitch on Saturday. On Sunday, Kentucky Downs had to cancel its racing card after running only two races. When you get heavy rain and can't move the races from the turf to a main track, things like that happen.

The races that were cancelled on Sunday will be rescheduled to this coming Tuesday, when drier weather is expected.

This is such a sucky thing. It seems to be a fake and disingenuous way to run a race. Saved themselves a bit of money, eh, and make less of it, purse be damned. Seems dishonest, to me. A rip-off.
