Just realizing that Pletcher doesn’t have any horses running in the Rebel.

Is he going to have a horse in the Derby this year? He’s got Spinoff going in the LA Derby but WOW and Country House could prove tough. Intrepid Heart hasn’t published a work since early February and I haven’t heard where he’s headed. Outshine is headed for the Wood Memorial but that field could be stacked depending on who else goes there.

Last Judgment in the ALW 4th was the possible Pletcher for the Rebel. Excellent group there with Dessman & Comedian.

That really is a nice group. In addition to Last Judgment, Dessman, and Comedian, the #6 All Bizness might be better than expected. Looks like he might like the added distance. His 1.5 length loss last time out came against Oncewewerebrothers, who has handled some pretty solid competition himself.

I just have a hypothetical question that I haven't seen answered here or on Twitter.. What's to stop a track from splitting races willy nilly? You could create a lot of graded stakes winners that way.

I'm not complaining or saying that's what happened here, just wondering. Could they run two 5-horse Grade 1 Florida Derby's?

A race splits when reaching a reasonable minimum for running a 2nd division. But it's the purses that would prevent tracks from running divisions with a small number.

To be eligible for grading, G3's must be $100,000, G2's $200,000 and G1's $300,000. The wagering would never offset the added purse expense, even if the horsemen at the track in question agreed to let the track use money from the purse account to run a 2nd division.

The Oaklawn horsemen agreed because they were in line for a purse increase anyway which was announced the other day, making it easier to OK moving $500k from their account to the 2nd Rebel.

That makes perfect sense, thank you.
