I don't think you necessarily are assured a bad trip from the 20 post. A closer can always drop back and a horse with some early speed can use it to get position.

When was the last time a real closer won the Kentuckey Derby? Seems to me that you have to be mid pack or better to have a chance in a 20 horse field.
