I think they and the District Attorney did everything they could to make the situation as bad as possible. Either that or they're just that inept. Either is possible.

And that prosecutor made it clear from the start he had no interest in bringing it to trial. The old saying goes that a District Attorney can get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich if he wants them to.
