Default The much maligned 3yo male division...

Didn't exactly take a step forward in terms of the 3 stakes we saw this weekend.

* The Jim Dandy was a virtual replay of a rapidly run N2X alw race at Delaware Park from a month ago. The winner, A Little Warm had clearly the fields highest last out Beyer of 105 and 15/1 2nd place finisher Miner's Reserve had clearly the fields second highest last out fig. Both horses will have serious trouble finding an extra furlong.

* The Curlin stakes was won in a 9 length romp by Winslow Homer. He's promising right? Ah, no! Not so, judging by the fact that his final time was 1.55 seconds slower than Malibu Prayer ran in the Ruffian 30 minutes later. Malibu Prayer's only prior attempt in a Grade 1 stakes race was a 2nd place finish in the Mother Goose .. a mere 19.25 lengths behind Rachel Alexandra.

* The Haskell was won by Lookin at Lucky in a 4 length romp. Has he finally developed into being a super freak? Judging by the fact that he ran an identical final time to the unspectacular older male Omniscient on the parallel time charts .. it's clear that the answer is a strong no.

Super Saver was off the board in the Haskell - and after early season defeats to Odyseses and Line of David - and a post Derby victory beatdown in the Preakness and Haskell - it's now starting to look like another Calvin Borel ridden Kentucky Derby winner may see their only 3yo win on the season come in the Kentucky Derby itself for the 2nd year in a row.

Here's looking to next weeks West Virgina Derby for a ray of hope. Concord Point's win in the Iowa Derby was a great performance - but it's pretty disconcerting how much Baffert seems to think that race has taken out of him.
