$10 exacta box 11 with 5-7

If you liked the 11 then you're not a bad bettor at all, you're just a horseplayer who narrowly missed a decent score. It happens all the time.

You'd have been a bad bettor if you really liked a different horse but bet the 11.

Bad "betting" is always a result of bad handicapping.
You keyed the wrong horse....it happens, move on.
Plus you have a very small bankroll, which doesn't help.

Hard to fault your handicapping. You came up with the top 3 finishers. You just didn't give yourself a chance to win by playing so few combinations of those 3.

I was alive to Icebox to hit the pick4. You would think I would have invested a huge amount to be in that position. Nah, $24. I have gotten over it and moved on. I did cry most of the afternoon, but I have moved on. And Gus was all over the winner. But I have moved on. My wife said I could buy me a new car if I would have hit it. But thats all in the past. Jesus, 24K for an 8/5er to get me a new frickin car. I have let it go a long time ago. Dammit.

Has anyone mentioned in the past few days how that trifecta paid pretty low?
I assumed plenty of people included Drosselmeyer on their tickets, but with a 12 horse field, The 8-5 favorite out of the money and a 13-1 shot on top, I thought that trifecta would have paid between 500 - $650.

Hell, the year Aflex Alex won, that trifecta paid around $650, and I believe that was with Andromedas Hero and....was it that Maiden, Nolan's Cat or something, in 3rd?

At first glance I thought the same, but 13-1 over 5-1 over 5-1 is not exactly outlandish. Not to mention Ice Box simply looked overbet in the win pool.

When betting, you have to treat it as an investment. You have to be diversified and play different kinds of bets, or some fine handicapping will be wasted.

I totally agree with your comments here. Especially the fact that betting is the hardest part. It's not very hard to pick two or three horses that are going to be there in a given race -- it's really about what bets you should make. I think that's what I have the most trouble with at this point.

I too have struggled with the betting part of the equation, but seemed to do well with both that and handicapping in the Belmont. It will be interesting to see whether it was just one of those rare days when I could do no wrong or something lasting. Hoping for the latter. I will be retiring sometime between August and November. Will have more time and less money. A nice score at the track occasionally would be very nice.
