Of course the union workers came out ahead- that's the whole point of being in a union. They have the power of numbers to collectively bargain so they don't get screwed as bad as people who are dumb enough to believe it when their private employer says don't worry; we'll take care of you; you can trust us.

the union didn't make out because of their collective bargaining agreement, they made out because they paid off politcians via their unions dues and said politicians crafted a special bankruptcy plan that protected the union while letting the non union employees twist in the wind. elected officials picking and choosing the winner is cronyism and it stinks.
there are courts for handling bankruptcies which are very good at deciding how to divvy up the assets of a failed company. those courts would not have been as kind to the UAW as their friends in Washington were.
