Tueflesberg

Interesting change of tatics from Ms. Sanders recently. Was told she was going to try and teach him to rate up to the Derby. She figures that Stormello will be a nagging thorn if if they hook in the Derby and both will be cooked hitting the far turn. Probably will anyway......regardless of a speed duel.

She will continue to try to teach Tueflesberg under the shadow of darkness (like Sea Biscuit) to rate so he sits in the first tier and make his move when asked on the first Saturday in may.

Not sold on the concept at all and will hopefully see this colt around later in the year sprinting. One tough cookie when sent from the gate.

However...Jamie Sanders was a top assistant for Nick Zito and knows the derby game quite well.

Interested in your thoughts

They will risk ruining a very talented sprinter if they continue to insist he is a Derby horse. It's unfortunate, but it's happened before, and it will happen many more times.

I agree completely with Andy. This horse could be a top notch sprinter if allowed.

I think this horse is in way over his head as a router.I agree with all,he should be a sprinter, maybe a mile at the most.He has already been throttled in too many races already, and could probably use a little rest by now.

sumitas 03-20-2007 08:52 PM

It seems like a good idea to skip the derby for him. He can't do everything.

Yes,Throttled. Most Horses that have little or no graded stakes first money do not do well in the triple crown.Thirds don't count.

Does anyone know why this horse seems to have trouble on the break or have traffic trouble in most of his races? Is it the blinkers? What about last sat? Trip notes say "unprepared" Never seen that before, although it does seem apropro. Arent sprinters supposed to break well from the gate?

JJP 03-21-2007 07:17 AM

When the words "Derby" and "Tuefelsberg" are used in the same sentence, I am correct in assuming they mean the Remington or Ohio Derby? No way in hell could they be considering the KY Derby......then again, that trainer is something like 1 for 52 at the FG so she must not know where to place her horses.

Left Bank 03-21-2007 10:52 AM

I think she is going by the theory that if I keep running him,he will win eventually.

sumitas 03-21-2007 01:17 PM

he kind of staggered out of the gate saturday. he was fortunate he had lots of room to slide right to the rail. he must have lost 2 lengths with that break so he actually ran a better race than at first glance.

easy goer 03-21-2007 03:17 PM

Trainer described it as "hopped" on the break which is a term I've at least seen before. Never knew what it meant, but I guess that is what a "hopped on the break" looks like.

Left at the Gate blog says connections (? or someone in the know) seem to think his pedigree calls for him to stretch out; go figure.

He's got a double-dose of that Monarchy family thru State; the best members of this family recently have been Johannesburg, Tale of the Cat, Minardi, and Pulpit. Milers for the most part, several that were better at 2 than 3 and reverted to sprinting thereafter. Pulpit was the closest thing to a classic horse from the line and he was by A.P. Indy, not Jo'burg, a top 2yo who didn't train on.

Hey, Cobalt Blue is in my RTTR stable, has been since the beginning. Dam's side a trifle iffy (Cornish Prince, sire of third dam Queen to Be, was a closet quarter horse, always scares me when looking for stayers), but I loved Queen to Be's half-brother Fair Test, a real long-winded turfer out in SoCal when I was a newby.

IT's not real clear, the author of LeftattheGate says Teuf. has an interesting pedigree for stretching out and then cites his column from 2/19:

"Teuflesberg, who made his 13th start, has suddenly now won three of four since getting buried in the Juvenile. He's been in training straight through since last April, so in the unlikely event that he's your 2007 Kentucky Derby winner, that would certainly cause a sudden change in the debate, wouldn't it? Seems like reason in itself to join the Teuflesberg fan club. He's by Johnannesburg out of a Devil's Bag mare, and the most interesting aspect of his pedigree to me is the fact that he is inbred 5x4 to the broodmare State (Nijinksy), with both sire and dam tracing to her tail-female. State is the dam of Narrate, who is the dam of Preach (and the 4th dam of Johannesburg), who's the dam of the fashionable young sire Pulpit (AP Indy)."

So make of that what you will. I know nothing of this pedigree stuff I leave it to you to parse...

They crossed State for Teuflesburg and that brings in a stamina influence. Also, T's bottom line is from the family of Round Table so there is stamina there. Enough stamina ? I'm more concerned about the number of races he's had.

There's a horse who's just waiting to burn money. I hope somebody decent shows up for the Ill Derby because its doubtful he's going to get another crawlfest pace, bunching a small field up all within 2 1/2 lengths.

Round Table was a 'perfect storm'; he had the stamina of his sire Princequillo and the speed of his dam's side (Sir Cosmo over Friar Marcus may mean nothing to you, but to GB-ers of the 1940s it meant 'sprint speed'.) Round Table's sister Monarchy won only one stakes race, the 6f Arlington Lassie S at 2, and most of her descendents have had similar profiles - good at 2 and/or over distances of a mile or less. It takes a sire of serious stamina like Le Fabuleux or A.P. Indy to get anything like a stayer from this line. And in my mind, Jo'burg doesn't qualify.
