EZ Warrior???

Anyone hear the latest of the Baffert's Derby Horse? This horse looked good winning at Hollywood Park in the Summer 2006 beating out a late charging GREAT HUNTER. He is my early pick to win next years derby. All I know is that he is owned by Zayat Stables.

If you have any info, let me know.

SCUDSBROTHER 12-20-2006 10:58 PM

BAFFERT'S ASSISTANT ANSWERED this the other day.Said he is doing great, and was entered in some races that didn't fill. You should see him race soon.Nice horse...Possible Pedigree problems though(as far as the Derby goes.)

You think he will have distance problems. He has distance on his dam side with Deputy Minister and Mr Prospector being his great grandfather.

I said POSSIBLEPedigree problems. As far as I am concerned ,anything with Carson City involved has possible distance limitations, but that's just me.I love the horse's races.Ran like a real smart horse.Like he was older than 2.

Gotcha and I agree with Carson City. And you are also right about the horse looking smart. I get the same impression.

I like looking for stellar 2yo's way ahead of time as Derby horses to watch.... Then following their odds through those crooked assed future book pools and their 3yo prep season... Finally, when only a slight few of them actually reach the KY Derby starting gate(if any at all), the best part is when their going off odds are higher than any odds you could get in the future book pools....

Example-
A friend of mine had $20 on Giacomo in the Derby future pool #1 at 25-1. We are sitting in the Orleans on Derby day and he says, "Giacomo has no chance to win here, at least it was only a $20 spot I wasted". As you all know he was 50-1 in the real pool and my friend failed to lay any more action on him.

I love the horses...

I agree with Scuds. EZ Warrior looks like a very good horse but I highly doubt he will be able to go 1 1/4 miles. I don't know if he will even get 1 1/8 miles. He is out of a Carson City mare named Carson Jen. I believe she was strictly a sprinter.

eajinabi 12-21-2006 03:44 AM

Wait a minute EZ Warrior is Sired by Exploit to which I recall is from Storm Cat. True he is by a Carson City Mare but distance is not influnced by the dam. If it was I would not pay 1.2 million for a sprinter-miler.

most people feel you get speed on top and stamina on the bottom, which means distance is influenced by the dam.

I was told that Sire determines Distance and Surface whereas Dam determines class. But what the hell do I know??

Balletto 12-21-2006 01:19 PM

Eaj,

You're correct on the old theory that the stallion influenced distance and the dam-side imparted the class, but in recent times, the Classic's have been won by colts who were sired by sprinters/milers but were out of dam's who female family had a lot of back stamina.

The ways of the world seem to be changing... it only makes sense though. Most of the commercial sire lines are very speed oriented and the stamina to get 10f+ will have to come from somewhere else.

SCUDSBROTHER 12-21-2006 01:26 PM

EAJ,if the horse is really, really good(but distance limited,)I think he can get the 10f(the 1st time he is asked to do it.)After that though, the horse can sour badly.Like the top filly in '88 that won the Derby(Winning Colors.)She was a really good 3 year old filly out here at Anita. She won the Anita Derby, and then was getting pretty late in the Kentucky Derby. She made it,but was toast for the rest of that Spring and Summer. She didn't really come back to form at all until the B.C. Distaff(a very close 2nd.)

To perhaps the best stretch performance visually of my lifetime.

The Indomitable DrugS 12-21-2006 02:05 PM

Winning Colors actually ran an outstanding 3rd to Risen Star in the Preakness after her Derby win. She was involved in a bitter pace battle, through fast fractions, with a champion named Forty Niner.

Winning Colors ended up 3rd, beaten just 2.5 lengths. Forty Niner ended up 7th beaten about 15 lengths. Forty Niner would win an ALW race, the Haskell, the Travers, lose a photo to Alysheba in the Woodward, and win the NYRA Mile in his next five starts...after the Preakness duel.

I know Blackthroatedwind has warned me about going into detail on these old races....but, in my opinion Winning Colors ran a better race in the Preakness than the Derby. Risen Star, on the other hand, ran an AMAZING race in the race Derby! He was hung out, and was the only horse doing any real serious passing. It was obvious Risen Star was best that day. However, I'm not so sure his Preakness race, even in victory, was better than WC's Preakness effort.

After the Belmont Stakes...Winning Colors returned in the Maskette, got loose on the early lead, but was wore down late by Personal Ensign...losing by about a half a length.

This is completely ridiculous. Anyone that has taken Biology 101 could tell people who feel this way how crazy it is.

Don't forget she was dueling while wide out in the track as well.

Yeah it is!

Point Given's dam would rocket to the lead in races....and, except for one time when she barely held at a mile on turf...she would always fire on the airbrakes late if the race was beyond 5.5 furlongs.

Point Given, on the hand, won the 12 furlong Belmont Stakes by the length of a city block.

rocketman 12-21-2006 02:34 PM

E Z Warrior worked this morning at Hollywood Park in 1:11.60. It was the co-second fastest of 15 at the 6 panel distance.

The other horse to duplicate that time was another Baffert trainee that hasn't been seen in a while, to my knowledge...........Mr. Sekiguchi.

I don't know if the two horses worked as a pair or not, but it does look like one or both of them may be nearing an afternoon appearance in the not-too-distant future.

SCUDSBROTHER 12-21-2006 02:55 PM

She(W.C.) was never the same(after going 10f.)She won the Anita Oaks,Anita Derby, and THE KENTUCKY DERBY,and then what did she win? Some Budweiser race in '89? She had dominant zip.She ran fields off their feet(trying to keep up with her.) Whatever she had left after the Derby was not her "A" game.Just shows you how good she was(that she could come close with her "B" game.)

This is not only ridiculous it runs completely contrary to the evidence of her career record.

She ran, as DrugS accurately pointed out, a superb race in the Preakness. She held a five length lead into the stretch before being run down late by the great Personal Ensign in the Maskette and then lost by a nose to the same Personal Ensign in the BC Distaff while finishing ahead of Goodbye Halo who would simply have dusted these paper tigers we have seen leading that division in recent years.

A better argument could be made that the Derby was not her best effort and all things considered she should have finished behind both Forty Niner and Risen Star....at least on that day.

While I agree that her 4-year-old season was a disaster....I think the credit for that should go to the butcher who trained her.

Can anyone name a single D. Ranged Lukas trained horse, who was raced in two or more triple crown races, and did anything at age 4?

Cat Thief?

The Indomitable DrugS 12-21-2006 03:17 PM

He never won a single race at age 4....or beyond.

But yeah...he was "right there" in a few sub-par runnings of important races. He did manage a 2nd in one Grade 1 and a 3rd in another Grade 1 stake that year.

I know he didn't win but he had a very good year ( second in the Whitney to Lemon Drop Kid ) and an extensive campaign.

Im glad I mentioned him....

blackthroatedwind 12-21-2006 03:41 PM

Wasn't Victory Speech bought privately from Jerkens after his debut?

The Indomitable DrugS 12-21-2006 03:42 PM

Do you remember the horse who Victory Speech beat in the Strub?

Clues: He was the longest shot on the board...ran over 50 times, and his two career stakes wins came in ungraded stakes at Ruidiso Downs. Another very popular internet board horse back in the day.

Yeah he was.. he was orginally owned by Robert Entenmann and trained by Jerkens...

blackthroatedwind 12-21-2006 03:44 PM

As I recall he lost his debut, at Belmont, at some ridiculously low price.

I don't remember the slightest thing about his 2yo season.

I know the same connections bought Thunder Gulch and moved him from Kimmel late in his 2-year-old season. He was one year before VS

KirisClown 12-21-2006 03:45 PM

You're right he lost to Busheta Buck.. a Leo Obrien runner.

1:11 and change is pretty common for Baffert runners. If Baffert runners dont work fast then I am curious. I think he is preping this horse really well for his next debut. I figure he gives him a 7F allownace before stretching him out

You were in diapers. They bought Thunder Gulch from Howie Bagels. Thunder Gulch lost by a nose in his debut ( I believe at 9:2 ) to a 25-1 shot from a Jersey trainer after having a tough trip. I know the first time he ran for Lukas was when he won the Remsen....the race before Cigar won the NYRA Mile.

ORIENTATE!!

The Indomitable DrugS 12-21-2006 03:51 PM

Yep!

I remember VS tailing off form as a 4yo. Luckily, I had one of those old Graded Stakes yearbooks ('97) from the DRF by my computer...and it had his 4yo season's form in it.
