Chrome to England
Just heard Art Sherman on the Roger Stein show. The owners are taking him to R.A. Sherman sounded devastated.....these owners are idiots.
|
Agree. Seems like they are squeezing the lemon dry. I guess after Ascot is Hong Kong?
Of course we complain if they don't stick their neck out and complain when they do. |
Its absolutely disgusting how they handled this also. Lets take Art all the way to Dubai and then get sold by Euro interests on why they should run at Royal Ascot and then blindside the hell out of him.
Sometime people just don't know how hard this game is or what they have, and its just too bad for the horse. For Art, its like a family member just kicked over from a heart attack on vacation, and people are not talking enough about the horse. Horses are generally routine based, and now he is going to the middle of Europe where they do things COMPLETELY different how things are done here. Horse isn't gonna know what planet he is on. The thing I find interesting is that this isn't Colburn but this other nitwit Martin, whom is supposedly majority owner, yet during the hoopla if I recall correctly, he didn't want the spotlight at all. Its just all around sad from all aspects, that someone with the golden ticket turns it into a paperbag. (I'll be honest and say I'm a little disappointed for selfish reasons because once he gets drilled at Royal Ascot, it will mean that when these idiots insist that he goes to the Arlington Million, he will be 20/1 in the Million, instead of 3/1) |

Anyways, I'm fine with the decision. No one cared when Verrazano or Animal Kingdom tried. |

Sherman's thoughts on Chrome going to England.

I hope they show his workouts on the web...I would like to see how he does with the change of direction. ;)

They're new owners who hit the lottery with their first horse. They're making mistakes lots of new owners make, the difference being they have a really good horse so they get to make them on a much bigger scale. Right now they're having fun, and think they're a lot better at this ownership thing than they actually are. They'll get a solid dose of reality with their next few animals, and either start to figure it out or get out of the business.
I feel really bad for Sherman, too, but then again, as new owners, DAP also didn't know enough to sell a majority percent interest and give the horse to a big name trainer after he won a few races, which is what a lot of more experienced owners would have done. So a terrific horseman who has paid his dues got to take a horse to the Derby. Whatever else happens with Chrome, for the rest of his life, Art Sherman is the trainer of a Kentucky Derby winner. |

Art was sad for the groom who isn't going and has been with the horse since day one.

idiots they should be given the job mucking his stall :zz:

Sherman
Bad enough the mess after the Belmont, at least Art Sherman was there showing grace in defeat.. This move seems incredibly disrespectful to a class act.

the pearl clutching being exhibited about this decision is ridiculous.
how many of the people up in arms over CC going to england were critics of zenyatta not shipping? how many saying he shouldn't run on turf were the same people saying wise dan needs to run on dirt? how often do people complain that the best duck the best? now we have a horse about to potentially square off against some of the best turfers in the world-and that's wrong? please, people, be consistent. make up your minds. |
He sure seems to know a lot about the stallion business for someone who's only owned this one first horse.
That speech was written for him. |

THUD! :zz: |

We're not talking apples to apples here. If John Sheriiffs would have taken THE GREAT Zenyatta overseas to tun on turf in her 4-year old season, he would have been called out too, and rightfully so. |

and we clamor for brits to come here for the bc....i just wish people would be consistent. but that's probably asking way too much. |

Let me prefix this post with the following: The horse will not be successful on turf in Europe unless he is trained by someone who completely rebuilds him and finds ability he has not displayed previously.
I actually get Martin's points and agree with most of it. What is the risk? Is he not always going to be at least the stallion prospect he is today? The colt has won 6 million to date the biggest paydays are behind him save the Breeder's Cup Classic and what a myriad of 500k G1's. The horse doesn't figure to be the favorite in Classic and has proven to be an honest VERY GOOD horse on dirt, hardily a superstar. I don't think he is better then SB I don't think he is much better then several 4 years olds that have yet to flourish namely a Tonalist Honor Code etc. Taking a shot and giving the horse a superior turf trainer in Europe isn't the dumbest risk. I look it at it as a VERY big long shot for him to become a world class turf horse but why not try and why not with people who are specialists at this in their backyard? And you know what this horses stallion future could be in Japan or Australia. Although Sid Fernando told me there was significant interest in him from KY breeders I am just not convinced they could be as interested as Foreign buyers especially if he proves us all wrong and is effective in Group 1 races. Didn't Verrazano do kind of the same thing last year? |

At the very least they should consider saving ground this time so they don't lose by 20+ lengths. |

I'm reserving judgment on Chrome's Ascot chances. It'd be great it he ran well. Nobody wants to see a nice horse whiff one. I will however maintain the owners get on my nerves. |
William Buick gets the mount, nasal strips a no go and then there's this kinda interesting read about the continued lack of... well let's just say certain parties continue not being all too happy.

To me Chrome's training in England and running in the Prince Wales at Ascot as a prep for the Arlington Million is like moving to Boston to train and run in the Boston Marathon as a prep for the Arlington Heights 10K. Neither makes much sense, in fact both scenarios are crazy.
