Having won the 2004 renewal of this event with Kathir (Woodman) and last year’s edition with Sterwins (Runaway Groom), Barbadian resident Eugene Melnyk will seek his third Gold Cup with Safety Zone. Claimed by Melnyk and conditioner Mark Casse for $40,000 out of a winning effort at Woodbine Oct. 10, the seven-year-old returned to the Canadian oval to annex the Oct. 31 Labeeb S. over yielding ground. Victorious in a Tampa starter handicap Jan. 8, Safety Zone was last seen finishing a late-running third back in Florida in an identical spot Jan. 29. American-based conditioner Wesley Ward, who has had previous success shipping to foreign lands, will send out his first runner in Barbados in Grand Cash. Runner-up in the 2009 GIII Calder Derby and victorious in the Blazing Sword S. at Calder this past summer, the chestnut was claimed for $25,000 when winning back at the South Florida track Nov. 27 and he dead-heated for top honors in a $50,000 seller last out at Gulfstream Jan. 6.
