A very tricky customer, and he can look very slow. I would have loved to have seen him over hurdles instead of in Dubai!

Final field.....
Tropical Star (poor boy) had won this last year..... he died shortly after in a freak accident. Valiance (USA) 4 starts 1-1-2 Lightly-raced colt, whose best run came when runner-up in a Listed race in England on his second of four starts. Has non-turf experience, having run twice on a polytrack surface, but has not run since May and is sure to play second fiddle to stablemate Asiatic Boy. Sea Hunter (GB) 26 starts 5-2-6 Already run four times this season, winning over course and distance on his penultimate start, before disappointing when fancied a week ago. Will appreciate the drop back in trip but a lot more needed here. Diabolical (USA) 19 starts 8-2-6 Has some top class form in the US, having finished runner-up at the highest level, and comes here on a hat-trick after victories in a Grade 3 and then Grade 2 contest (both over today’s trip). Makes his Godolphin and UAE debut here, and the Dubai operation are bang in form, judging by their double last week. Big chance. Terrific Challenge (USA) 21 starts 8-7-2 American import who shone on his first season in the UAE last season. Won the Mahab Al Shimaal on Super Thursday here last year - the switch to dirt not proving a problem on his first start for Doug Watson. He then followed up with a respectable seventh in the Dubai Golden Shaheen, before disappointing on his seasonal bow last month. A chance if he can recover his best form. Malayeen (AUS) 20 starts 4-3-6 In the form of his life at the age of six. Having his sixth run at the track this season and comes here on a hat-trick, having made use of a feather weight to see off Frosty Secret in the Winter Racing Challenge Final. Will need to improve significantly again and has little chance on the ratings. Power Politics (USA) 10 starts 2-1-1 Ex-Godolphin inmate, who scored on his penultimate start over course and distance last month, before finishing seventh behind Malayeen. Can reverse the form, as 24lb better off here for a four and a half length beating, but should still be outclassed. Botanical (USA) 22 starts 3-3-2 Not won since June 2005 and makes his seasonal debut here, having last been seen in the Jebel Ali Sprint on March 23. Not much to recommend him. Salaam Dubai (AUS) 28 starts 6-4-3 Has done connections, who seem to have knack of uncovering top-notch sprinters in the UAE, proud. Finished seventh behind Terrific Challenge in the Mahab Shimaal, before producing a career best third in the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen. Won on his seasonal bow at Jebel Ali in November, before disappointing when fifth behind Sea Hunter over course and distance last month. Has a winning chance if he can repeat his Shaheen form. Asiatic Boy (ARG) 9 starts 5-2-0 Took the UAE racing scene by storm last season, winning four races including the UAE Triple Crown, highlighted by the UAE Derby on Dubai World Cup night. Was then tried twice in the UK in top class contests won by Ramonti and Authorized, where the world class competition, longer distances and turf tracks proved beyond his reach. Takes the unusual route of dropping down to a sprint trip, but should have too much natural speed to be caught here. Mercury Chief (SAF) 17 starts 4-1-0 A Group 2 winner in South Africa, he has run four times in the UAE, winning a handicap at Jebel Ali more than a year go, before finishing fifth in a conditions race there on his seasonal bow last month. Will need this drop down in trip to have a drastic effect to take a hand here. Good luck, Asiatic Boy, Diabolical, Salaam Dubai and Terrific Boy! |

UAE press release.....
Curlin heads DWC nominations (no author) Curlin (pictured), officially the world’s highest-rated horse still in training, heads a total of 169 horses nominated for the US$6 million Dubai World Cup, sponsored by Emirates Airline on March 29. They hail from 11 countries: UAE (78), US (38), Japan (18), UK (11), Brazil and France (6), Argentina, Turkey, Saudi Arabia (3), Macau (2) and Bahrain (1). Apart from the Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, some other top names nominated for the world’s richest race run over 2000m on dirt, include Premium Tap (KSA), Asiatic Boy (SA), Happy Boy (BRZ), Literato (UAE), Daaher (US), Daiwa Scarlet (JPN), Vermilion (JPN), Awesome Gem (US), Latency (ARG), Student Council (US), and West Virginia (US). The remaining card has also attracted most of the best horses in the world at this first closing stage for nominations. The US$5million Group 1 Dubai Duty Free, sponsored by Dubai Duty Free and run over 1,777m on turf, is headed by Godolphin’s flagbearer of last season, Ramonti, as well as the triple Group 1-winning French filly Darjina, and New Zealand’s latest superstar Seachange. The US$5million Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic, sponsored by Nakheel and run over 2400metres on turf, has attracted six of the first seven home in last year’s race: Vengeance Of Rain (HK), Oracle West (SAF), Youmzain (UK), Sushisan (SAF), Pop Rock (JPN) and Quijano (GER), as well as the top class Japanese star Meisho Samson. American dominate the first Group 1 race on the card, the US$2million Dubai Golden Shaheen, sponsored by Gulf News and run over 1200m on dirt. Breeders’ Cup Sprint hero Midnight Lute, last year’s winner Kelly’s Landing and Idiot Proof all represent the US, while Australia is represented by their flying filly Miss Andretti. The US$1million Godolphin Mile, a Group 2 race run over 1600m on dirt and sponsored by Etisalat, could see Spring At Last (US) trying to defend his crown from 12 months ago, while the US$2million Group 2 UAE Derby, run over 1800m on dirt and sponsored by Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group, has attracted the top British colt, Strike The Deal and the unbeaten American raider El Gato Malo. Dubai Racing Club CEO Mr Frank Gabriel Jr said: “The nominations for the 13th Dubai World Cup meeting are extremely satisfying. “Most people agreed that last year’s meeting was the best yet and that the fixture can now lay claim to being the most competitive and international day’s racing anywhere in the world. “What is particularly rewarding is that a number of horses who competed last year are set to return and it shows that many horsemen are keen to keep their horses in training now, and target international meetings such as this one. “We are likely to see a lot of horses who ran in the Breeders’ Cup, Japan Cup and Hong Kong International meetings at the end of last year, then competing here, and it shows how strong and thriving the international racing scene is.” |

some thoughts on 2 brazilians....
Bain Douche....I like the colt a lot! He has heart...and he is talented too, imo...his last 2 starts were in longer distances (2.000m and 2.400m) so i don't know if the reduced distance now will affect him.....he ran the 3 legs of the triple crown in his last 3 starts...he won the first (and was disqualified to 2nd place) got 3rd and 5th in the other legs. I respect Aquino on the race too….it will be an interesting race….by the way…Bain Douche has never run on the dirt… Dono da Raia…..i don’t know what to expect from this horse….2006/2007 brazilian horse of the year….this one is SUPERB….but he is showing nothing since he was sold to the sheik…and his last start was nearly one year ago…If he is fit…he must be respected. NCTD – Is Lamico Steve entered to run this week? |
