Eden's Storm
Some may disagree, but this is a real pet peeve of mine. STOP FIGHTING YOUR HORSE. I have no idea what the hell most of these jockeys are thinking when they strangle down their horses for half the race. Jesus. Eden's Storm might not have won today's 8th at Gulfstream, but I think she would've been better than fourth had Douglas not wrestled the horse for an hour. Instead of "rank," the chart comment for a horse throwing its head about should more often be "jockey's asshattery."

Rene Douglas is just about the WORST ****in jock out there. Nothing else need be said.
For another example of a BIGTIME CHOKE DOWN, check out Sea Chanter (GP-02-22-09_R9). I'm with you, if you choke a horse down early, then why would you expect it to respond late? Getting choked down is like riding fixed-gear INTO a strong headwind: it sucks all the energy out of you. As a related aside, this is why I think so highly of Kent D. Unlike some of the other MACHO jocks who take it personally when their horse want to GO, and fight the to excessive lengths, he's very good at restraining without fighting/choking. A very good example would be his rides on Sharp Susan in comparison to those of Cornelio and (I believe) Castro on SS. I suspect this is not only because he has a good 'touch' but it's a result of 'superior' strength. |
