Looks like it's official and she's retired.

I know she isn't a Smarty girl but there's a very nice one to keep an eye on... her name is Thumping (Any Given Saturday).

SIA Cup and KrisFlyer Sprint draw stellar names

Singapore Turf Club
12/03/2014

A total of 164 horses hailing from 16 countries, including 39 local entries from Singapore, have emerged from the first round of nominations to Singapore’s two International Group 1 races on 18 May.

The S$3 million Singapore Airlines International Cup (2000m) has attracted 92 entries for its 14th running, while its sister race, the S$1 million KrisFlyer International Sprint (1200m) which will be in its ninth renewal, has garnered 72 entries.

Among the leading lights featured in the SIA Cup list are last year’s winner, Hong Kong’s MILITARY ATTACK (pictured) who shares the highest international rating of 124 with Ireland’s MAGICIAN. A host of Group 1 winners such as Irish Champion Stakes winner THE FUGUE, last Saturday’s South African-bred Jebel Hatta winner VERCINGETORIX, Longines Hong Kong Cup victor AKEED MOFEED, recent Chipping Norton Stakes winner BOBAN from Australia and dual Canadian International champion JOSHUA TREE are amongst the nominees.

Singapore has thrown in the mix 16 of its best middle-distance performers headed by arch-rivals STEPITUP and SUPER NINETYSEVEN, Longines Singapore Gold Cup winner TROPAIOS as well as rising stars JOHNNY GUITAR and HOLY WARRIOR.

The KrisFlyer International Sprint, which will be run as the fourth Leg of the Global Sprint Challenge (GSC) has attracted two past winners in Hong Kong’s LUCKY NINE, triumphant in 2013, along with the Singapore-trained hero of the 2011 edition, ROCKET MAN.

There is no shortage of depth among the visitors in the Sprint race, with some of the quality names including Australia’s triple Group 1 winner MOMENT OF CHANGE, outstanding Irish sprinter GORDON LORD BYRON and Hong Kong’s RICH TAPESTRY, who made a successful raid to Dubai to annex the Group 3 Mahab Al Shimaal, a prep race for the Group 1 Golden Shaheen.

Besides ROCKET MAN, the home team comprises another 22 of its best sprinters, including the likes of MR BIG, ZAC SPIRIT, EMPEROR MAX, RITE OF SPRING and JOHNNY GUITAR who has been entered for both races at this stage.

Cup and Sprint garner top quality fields
Singapore Turf Club

A host of high-class gallopers from here and around the world will once again take centrestage at the Singapore Racecourse at Kranji on 18 May with the running of Singapore’s two International Group 1 races, the $3 million Singapore Airlines International Cup (2000m) and $1 million KrisFlyer International Sprint (1200m).

Last year’s dual-title winning country, Hong Kong, will have a strong hand in both races with a total of four runners, headlined by its two winners, MILITARY ATTACK and LUCKY NINE , coming back to defend their crowns in the SIA Cup and KrisFlyer respectively. Trainer John Moore, who made it 1-2 in the SIA Cup, will also bring along runner-up DAN EXCEL, who ran third in last Sunday’s Group 1 Champions Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin and a top-class KrisFlyer raider in recent Dubai Golden Shaheen (1200m) winner STERLING CITY.

Two other trainers vying for the SIA Cup the second year running are Doug Watson and Jane Chapple-Hyam. American but United Arab Emirates-based Watson had no luck with Meandre (SIA Cup) and Dux Scholar (KrisFlyer) last year, but will hope for a better result in the SIA Cup with LIMARIO, a German-bred who has also competed creditably in Dubai while Australian-born but English-based Chapple-Hyam will have another crack at the SIA Cup with MULL OF KILLOUGH, who ran fifth for Great Britain last year.

Japan will line up last year’s Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Cup (2000m) runner-up, the Hisashi Shimizu-trained TOKEI HALO, their first SIA Cup runner in the last five years, but an even longer absentee, the United States, will make a comeback after nine years, with the Darrell Vienna-trained SI SAGE, a group performer in France before moving to America.

Two other marquee names to join the 2000m showpiece this year are SIDE GLANCE and SMOKING SUN. The well-travelled SIDE GLANCE is probably better remembered for his Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) win for Andrew Balding during the Spring Carnival at Flemington last year. Prepared by 2009 SIA Cup-winning trainer Pascal Bary (Gloria De Campeao), SMOKING SUN is the recent winner of the Group 2 Prix d’Harcourt at Longchamp.

Besides LUCKY NINE and STERLING CITY, the KrisFlyer has attracted a duo of sprinters from Ireland, namely BALMONT MAST and RUSSIAN SOUL, and one from Great Britain, MEDICEAN MAN, but trained by the Australian-born Jeremy Gask. Irish trainer Edward Lynam is bringing BALMONT MAST for another crack at the KrisFlyer after his creditable fourth last year while his fellow countryman Michael Halford, who saddled Invincible Ash in the KrisFlyer in 2012, returns with this year’s Group 3 Al Shindagha Sprint (1200m) winner RUSSIAN SOUL while MEDICEAN MAN is also a regular Dubai campaigner who ran a close-up fourth to Amber Sky in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint (1000m).

The local contingent is again well represented in both races. The SIA Cup charge will be headed by last year’s Group 1 Longines Singapore Gold Cup (2200m) winner TROPAIOS and three of the first four home in the Group 2 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2000m), WILD GEESE, JOHNNY GUITAR and CITY LAD.

The KrisFlyer, which stayed on home soil twice when Rocket Man (2011) and Ato (2012) held court against the overseas horses, has drawn a fine array of Singapore’s top sprinters, headed by arch-rivals ZAC SPIRIT and EMPEROR MAX, respectively winner and runner-up in this year’s Group 1 Lion City Cup (1200m) and Group 3 Kranji Sprint (1200m).

Also in the mix are sprinting stalwarts like Group 3 Merlion Trophy (1200m) winner EL PADRINO, CAPTAIN OBVIOUS (fourth in 2012 KrisFlyer), GOAL KEEPER and SLEW OF LODE.

Update: Russian Soul is out...

Don't keep up the way I used to BUT very happy to see Thumping entered in the Stewards' Cup on Sunday, nice to see David Flores up. Very tough field (Johnny Guitar, Slew of Lode, Emperor Max, etc) but if she does well I think she goes to the Derby. Yea!

http://www.turfclub.com.sg/Racing/Pa...aceCard/2834/9

As an aside and a very special one Upsala is also running on Sunday (!!!). Personally I wish he were retired and at home (NZ) but it's nice to finally see his name once more so at least there's that.

Flores disqualified one year - Singapore Stewards

25/03/2015

SINGAPORE FEBRUARY MEETING 2015

SUNDAY, 22 FEBRUARY 2015:

RACE 1 [TF0261]

The Inquiry into the run of KISS ME in the first race at the Singapore Turf Club Meeting on Sunday, 22 February 2015 was concluded on Wednesday, 25 March 2015. After taking evidence from Jockey D Flores (pictured) and Trainer HW Tan, the Trainer of KISS ME, Jockey Flores was found guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing. The particulars of the charge are:

.1 in that from the 600m to the 400m, he failed to improve his position when it was reasonable and permissible to do so; and

.2 he failed to ride with sufficient vigour and determination over the final 400m.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into account the nature of the charge and his record. Jockey Flores was disqualified for a period of one year with immediate effect from Wednesday, 25 March 2015 to Thursday, 24 March 2016 both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal.

Some really nice additions to the KrisFlyer / SIA Cup...

Did not post the very sad news about Waikato up here but he's on the angels thread. Had to mention it.

In happier news, Affleck and Johnny Guitar both run tomorrow and Zac Spirit on Sunday!

(... and good luck to Flax who pretty much only wins once every year but whatever. Maybe this will be it and he can relax till next year. ).
