Cavan Thunder, Jaybird's Miracle, & Happiness Is

Cavan Thunder from Arlington's 7th race on Friday July 18. She broke her maiden in this run, but go take a look at it. She was held up at the very back, hugging the rail, and looked beat turning for home. Larry Sterling angled her out (angled might be a kind word for it....) and she absolutely took off and won with room to spare. It's not like she took advantage of a blistering pace, either. She beat a couple of decent runners, no world-beaters, but if this half sister to Dance Away Capote comes back in a NW1X next time out, she should be tough to beat, no matter what the price is. With a clean trip, she wins by 5 on Friday.

Jaybird's Miracle had the race from hell in the following race on Friday, the 8th race. He was incredibly full of run, squeezed through a hole on the rail and was so far through it he was almost even with the horse to his outside before that tiring no-hoper came in and he was forced to check badly. He tried to come again when the hole opened, and it closed right back up again as he started to get through. With the rather unimpressive way the winner looked, and the way this guy was moving, it's hard to see how he loses this race if he gets through. He wasn't persevered with after that, and the race will be much better than the running line looks and the price should be right next time.

Happiness Is has now won twice at the meet, clearing her NW1X and NW2X conditions. She's gone well clear (about 15 lengths in the NW1X, and about 6 in the NW2X) on the lead over soft turf both times out and when the fractions have been posted, she logically should have quit badly in the lane in both. Instead, she won for fun the first time, and won with room to spare over stakes winner Love Handles last Sunday the 13th. Not sure where she'll show up next, as there aren't going to be a ton of conditions left for her at Arlington, but really, she seems to have turned a huge corner and appears to be able to just run as fast as she wants for as long as she wants. She's solid and could show up in overnight stakes company next time out and may rate a chance against more accomplished fields in such an event based on how she's been freewheeling and how impressive she's looked down the lane in her last two. She just doesn't seem to know how to quit.

They certainly take their time and don't rush their runners back.

Probably helps explain why Mitchell has such gaudy numbers with long layoff horses.
