Some of Crist's further thoughts on options for Hi 5 plays (12 horse field)...


1) A key to win and a second key to run second or third. Let's say those horses are #1 and #2, and you want to use five other horses underneath. You could do this for $120 by buying the following two tickets:

$1 SHF: 1 / 2 / 3,4,5,6,7 / 3,4,5,6,7 / 3,4,5,6,7 = $60
$1 SHF: 1 / 3,4,5,6,7 / 2 / 3,4,5,6,7 / 3,4,5,6,7 = $60


2) Use three keys -- one must win and the other two must both finish fourth or better. You could do this for $216, using four other horses underneath, as follows:

$1 SHF: 1,2,3 / 1,2,3 / 1,2,3 / 4,5,6,7 / 4,5,6,7 = $72
$1 SHF: 1,2,3 /1,2,3/4,5,6,7 / 1,2,3 / 4,5,6,7 = $72
$1 SHF: 1,2,3 / 4,5,6,7 / 1,2,3 / 1,2,3 / 4,5,6,7 = $72


3) Desperate to hit the all-button for 5th? You could key a winner, with four others in positions 2-3-4, and then roll the dice for fifth as follows:

$1 SHF 1 / 2,3,4,5 / 2,3,4,5 / 2,3,4,5 / ALL = $192

My pleasure and I'm confident that Crist/DRF wouldn't mind this spread around as it is available in the public section of the paper.

This is the most expansive/detailed discussion/explanation Crist has had of the 5 and as always, his analysis/opinion is invaluable. The bet isn't for everyone, but it's catching on as many thought it would, and will continue to grow in popularity when carry pools like today's come forth. While Magna gets bashed endlessly for many of their follies, they have been very successful creating and implementing new wagers (Hi 5; Magna 5) and deserve credit for it...

Huge carryover in this bet at Churchill today. Unfortnuately, thanks to the ADW impasse, few can bet it anyway.

It makes a great addition to his book 'Exotic Betting', that I was lucky enough to meet and talk with him about at AP.
