Default Derby Week . . . $ & Bonus Extras, Opinions and Insights

The 150th Kentucky Derby (starting 9 years after the end of the Civil War)
Quite amazing!

As usual every year we add extra fuel to the Tripe Crown race days starting with The Derby of course so herer we go again:

1. Your wallet is doubled to $200 with the 4 wager limit still there. If you play The Oaks Derby Double that counts as one of your 4 wagers.
2. We will be awarded double points also, not double bonus points though.
3. Extra bonus plays . . .
- 10 bonus pts to pick the straight exacta
- 15 bonus pts for the straight trifecta
- 10 bonus pts if you pick the last place horse
- 10 bonus pts for the closest guess to the official attendance number

4. Also in this thread tell us what's on your mind about the race, horses your looing at, post positions draw favoring any horse over the others, best long shot play, the weather faving any horse . . . it could always rain but I hope not . . . and other thoughts you have about the Derby..

Thanks for playing and for being who you are!!!

I remember that as a Breeders' Cup activity; just don't recall doing that for Derby Day, but memory can be a very elusive thing.

Made me laugh Cal, that "t" jumped ship to the next word, but I like the idea. If there's not a few typos and mispelled words in my posts, it must have come from a spamer, not me.

Looks like a tough post position for Fierceness and Pletcher. I saw that no horse has won the Derby from that gate..May boad well for Sierra Leone and Chad Brown. Havent been close to the prep faces, does Fierceness have enough early speed to clear the crowd?

I think that in 2020 Authentic wore saddlecloth 18; however, due to a scratch of a horse to his inside, he actually broke out of gate 17. Can anyone else help me verify that recollection?

I think that Fierceness has enough early speed to be forwardly placed down the long run to the first turn. It helps also that he has the rest of the early speed to his inside, so Johnny V should be able to move over before the crush of the turn. However, it appears that Just a Tough, Dornach and Track Phantom all have about as much early speed, so I just don't see Fierceness being able to set an easy pace. Besides, this is the Derby, so you can usually count of someone to forget they have to last 1 1/4 miles and gun for the lead. For me, it is difficult to trust Fierceness in the event that there is a fast or a contested pace. When he has had everything go his way, he is awesome and by far the most talented horse in the race. But, when it hasn't gone his way - see Holy Bull and Champagne.

In short (for me? Hah!) there might be some reasons to not bet on Fierceness, but the fact that he will be breaking from post 17 isn't one of them.

Turns out that the issue of post 17 is academic. With the scratch of Encino, Fierceness will slide over one slot into gate 16.

According to the chart there were only 15 horses in that race. Authentic's post was listed as 15 so I'm not sure if they moved the posts away from the rail.

I really don't think that I will wager on the Derby via our site save a small Oaks / Derby Double. My main reason for this is I have no clue what to make of the
Japanese horses and as Joly stated there is value to be found on the undercard.
If I change my mind and dive into the pool and on other sites my key horse will be Just a Touch.

Thanks for checking RQ. There must have been a bunch of scratches in that Derby. Then again, 2020 was a very strange year all around.

Sounds like it should be a thing at maybe Lonestar Park or Sam Houston Racetrack.

YES!!! Been to both of them and Lone Star is pretty close to where I live but have not been here for at least 2 years with so much going on with my wife and I'm not sure I feel like going there without her.

I may have to eat my words, but they both look a little on the slow side and also one of them shipped to Dubai and I guessing back to Japan and then here. Sounds like way too much shipping to me. I'm not using either one of them. I'll probably regret it if I do play the Derby, but it's hard to resist.

I know what you are talking about. My wife passed in 2017. My activities have been severely curtailed ever since. Of course, after that happened, then Covid came along and then my Grandkids are all grown up now and they no longer need me to be the Soccer Grandpa/Chauffeur. I am now like a hunk of moldy cheese in the refrigerator that needs to be thrown out, but I'm getting a bit tired of the feeling and I think I hear the siren song of Vegas playing so I'm thinking I may have to take a trip maybe at the end of the Summer. Vegas is a place that is always re-inventing itself, so I'm sure there will be plenty of new things to see.

The thing that was not strange about it was that Baffert won it. Now it seems strange that he is not in it.
