Denied again...

Famous Name only 2nd in the G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis in Munich (to Durban Thunder).

Such a nice horse and I mean 14 wins from 26 starts (I think 25 were stakes races) but he just can't seem to get that G1 win.

Some day!

Teams for Shergar Cup confirmed...

The final line-up of teams for the 2011 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup,the world’s premier international jockeys’ team competition at Ascot on Saturday 6 August has been confirmed.

Champion jockey Paul Hanagan (Great Britain) and 100 times Group 1-winning jockey Olivier Peslier (Europe) were on Monday confirmed as the two remaining team captains for Saturday’s Shergar Cup, which has attracted a massive entry.

Although the six races are limited to ten runners and two reserves each, a total of 207 entries were made at the six-day stage with the smallest entry being the 21 for the Sprint.

Hanagan will be joined by Hayley Turner and Jim Crowley in the four team event where they will take on sides from Ireland, Europe and the Rest of the World.

Richard Hughes, who has captained the Irish team the last two years will again be fulfilling that role. He will be joined by team mates Fran Berry and Colm O'Donoghue.

A powerful Rest of the World Team comprises the all-time record holders from Hong Kong and Japan, Doug Whyte and Yutaka Take, and Aussie ace, Hugh Bowman.

In the European team Olivier Peslier will be joined by Mirco Demuro*** and Christophe Lemaire.

My favorite horse in this whole thing is Reverence and he's being ridden by my favorite jockey here (Douggie Whyte... do it for Hong Kong!).

He's a grand old guy but I suspect even the talented Mr. Whyte can't squueze a win outta him... but that's okay!

Good luck Doug, come home safe kids.

Any of you guys rooting for anyone / team / horse / jockey?

(Good luck to Hayley too).

(Thinking maybe Master of Arts, Hawk Montain, Chock a Block but really only looked for a sec so maybe should just keep my mouth shut.)

The fields, draws and jockeys for the 2011 Shergar Cup at Ascot on Saturday. The six race programme will be broadcast on Sky Racing2 and Sky Racing World commencing at 9.50pm AEST.

The 10 runners in each race were ranked from 1 to 10 by form experts/odds compilers from Ladbrokes, the Official Bookmaker to the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. A complex formula was created to ensure that each of the four teams - Great Britain, Ireland, Europe and Rest of the World - received a balanced spread of higher and lower ranked/priced horses and, further to that, that each of the three jockeys representing each team also gets a balanced spread of higher and lower ranked/priced horses for his/her five rides.

The fields, draw and jockeys - note times are BST and Hugh Bowman's rides are highlighted:

No mention of the Juddmonte International today. Where Midday and Twice Over try to give Juddmonte their first win in their owner's self sponsored race. The way Midday ran last time, if she repeats that effort she will be very tough.

Thanks, I'll have to see the replay when I get home, slightly shocked from the description:

Quote:
Midday, the choice of stable jockey Tom Queally, looked sure to score when going a length to the good at the furlong pole, but she started to drift off a true line and Ian Monfgan galvanised Twice Over for one final effort and it was enough to snatch the spoils.

Redboard alert. I heard one of the chaps on the Sporting Life radio program describe why he thought Await whatever was far too low in the market and why the bet should be Twice Over. He convinced me, I bet him and made enough to pay for the day's stupid bets (Namidian!).

Wednesday turned out to be a high-point. Keep thinking too much. First instinct was to back Talwar to win in the Solario (lone speed, softish course) but talked myself out of it. Similar story when looking to back Duncan both ways in the Lonsdale, then backed the wrong 9yo to place (Blue Bajan instead of Bergo). Sigh, it's only money.

Happy retirement to Hali...

http://mickchannon.tv/page/features

Nice vid feature on his last day with Mick and I had to wait to actually watch it cause I knew I'd be crying like a moron...

Halicarnassus ran 71 times (51 stakes races)... Dubai, Italy, Japan, Turkey... a world traveler, grand old warrior... he'll stand in Turkey where he made his final start.

I'll miss him.

Oh they won't mind of I copy it...

Yea!

MICK IS DELIGHTED, WE UNINTENTIONALLY LIED - HALICARNASSUS IS BACK!

To a list that includes Lazarus, Frank Sinatra, Muhammad Ali, Elvis Presley, Bobby Ewing & even Luke Harvey, you can now add HALICARNASSUS.

You really couldn't make it up!

He arrived back at West Ilsley early this morning, in spite of our much heralded fond goodbye last week when he headed out to Turkey to compete in the Bosphorus Cup before remaining there as a Stallion.

We only achieved half of the job however!

Mick is delighted but we're not sure about a horse who was no doubt enjoying the sunshine and the prospect of a change of pace. His trainer on the other hand loves his sport.

"Ha ha ha! I knew the quarantine laws wouldn't let me down! There's a million restrictions and he's had to return to us before going back which is bloody stupid but also why we had him provisionally booked on yesterday's flight just in case.

"The Atman Family are happy if we can keep Halicarnassus happy so we may have jumped the gun with announcing that he'll never see a racetrack again! He's back, fine and well and will be off to Turkey once we've jumped through a few more hoops with the quarantine officials.

"He ran a super race in the Bosphorus Cup and battled all the way home against some quality opposition. Age has blunted his speed a fraction but that's not a crime and we'll see how he is in the next few weeks.

"He's a nightmare to lock in a box and I wouldn't be surprised if he was out racing sooner rather than later. It's an added bonus I suppose so we apologise for the false information - it wasn't our intention to mislead!"
