Prominent owner and breeder Frank Generazio Jr., who with his wife, Patricia, campaigned multiple graded stakes winners and track record setters, died Nov. 14. He was 91.

Generazio, who was a resident of Jupiter, Fla., and Cape Cod, Mass., got his start in the industry in the 1980s in his native New England and in the early part of his career he also trained his horses at Rockingham Park and Suffolk Downs. The first graded stakes winner to carry the Generazio pink-and-green colors was New England champion Concorde Bound, who after retirement from racing in 1986 sired progeny that would become the foundation of their successful breeding program.

"We are saddened to learn of the passing of New England Hall of Fame owner Frank Generazio. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends, and all who loved him," Suffolk Downs posted on Twitter and Facebook.

Frank and Pat, in whose name most of their most memorable horses ran, branched out their racing and breeding operation to New York, New Jersey, and Florida. In the last decade New York-based trainer Christophe Clement took over the stable and he conditioned the Generazio homebreds, which included multiple graded stakes winners Discreet Marq, Pure Sensation, and Disco Partner .

Mary Hartmann, formerly based in New Jersey, trained Presious Passion, the multiple grade 1-winning turf specialist who ran in Pat's name for eight seasons and earned $2,694,599. He finished second in the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T) in 2009.

Discreet Marq was a third generation homebred and winner of the Del Mar Oaks (G1T) who later sold for $2.4 million, and Pure Sensation and Disco Partner each in successive years set an individual course record for six furlongs at Belmont Park while winning the Japipur Invitational Stakes (G3T) in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

"It's a big loss because he's been a firm supporter of the stable," Clement said. "The first horse I trained for Mr. Generazio was Discreet Marq, who was a top-class filly, and he provided the stable with some top-class horses ever since like Disco Partner, Pure Sensation. They are very good owners. He was a remarkably successful owner/breeder with his wife. Everything about Mr. Generazio should be said with him and his wife because everything was done as a team. Not only was he a top-class owner/breeder, but more importantly he was a great friend. I grew very fond of him."

Generazio owned New England Sand and Gravel Company, which was founded in 1939 in Framingham, Mass. He was the longtime and influential president of the New England affiliate of the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, held leading positions in the National HBPA over many years, and was a member of the New Jersey HBPA.

He is survived by his wife, Pat, and several children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Memorial arrangements were incomplete as of early Monday afternoon.

[Alabama Stakes]

Way back in the day we used to sit in the box next to Mr And Mrs Generazio at Suffolk Downs. It was right on the wire. Their box was with the Minnassian Brothers, who taught them a bunch of stuff in my opinion . The first good hoss I remember them owing was a hoss named Foolish Move. Seven T Stable. Green with pink dots, the original colors. Ronny Dandy trained for them . Then came Willow End Stable with the familiar Orange and White Diamonds. Concorde Bound was a cannon. He changed everything. When they took him down in the Suffolk Downs sprint which was a big money race, the locals were wicked sad as were the connections. They really did well over the years with a good game plan. RIP
