George Washington's girl
BH.....
George Washington Sires Filly George Washington, who was euthanized after breaking down in the Breeders' Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I) in October, sired his first reported foal, according to European Bloodstock News. A filly out of the Rainbow Quest mare Flawlessly was born Feb. 4 at the Irish National Stud. Sired by Danehill, George Washington was a two-time Cartier Award winner before entering stud at John Magnier and partners' Coolmore Stud in Ireland in 2007. He was relieved of stallion duty after experiencing fertility problems and returned to training. Coolmore then retired one of its group I winners, French champion Holy Roman Emperor (also by Danehill), to take the place of George Washington at stud. Back with trainer Aidan O'Brien, George Washington ran in three group I races leading up to the Classic, running third in two of them and fourth in the other. In the Classic, he suffered a fracture of a cannon bone as well as fractured sesamoids. Flawlessly, owned by Stefano and Loreto Luciani, is the dam of French group winner Ombre Legere and U.S. grade I stakes-placed Flawly, dam of French group winner Best Name. http://breeding.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=43529 |

I was about to post this in the Paddock, and then realized MMSC would already have been on top of it in International.
I make no secret of being angry that breeding controls the sport, but I can't help being happy at this news. How many was he said to have actually impregnated? Seven?

A more detailed B-H story is up...
http://www.bloodhorse.com/viewstory_plain.asp?id=43544 Hints that Coolmore doesn't believe there will be ANY other Geo. Washington foals. Makes this a fascinating filly...

The last I heard was that many of the mares had 'slipped' and that his one remaining mare in foal was somewhere in Italy. So whether this mare has moved from Italy to Ireland or whether there are at least two, I'm not sure.
Why couldn't she have been at the National Stud here..... I would have been with the foal everyday then.

Racing Post...
Goffs offer George Washington foal at November Sale Rachel Pagones A RARE foal by George Washington, the scintillating 2,000 Guineas winner who died last year while contesting the Breeders' Cup Classic at Monmouth Park, will be offered at the Goffs November Foal Sale. The youngster should be particularly sought after as a filly who would have potential broodmare value even without the added rarity value of her sire, who had been returned to training at Ballydoyle after suffering severe fertility problems in his first year at stud. Although it is widely believed the son of Danehill impregnated only a few mares, Andrea Mercer, Stud Book director at Weatherbys, could not confirm how many of his foals were born. “George Washington has got progeny, but there are many mares from whom we are still awaiting returns, and I therefore would not be in a position to comment on whether this foal is the only progeny or how many there may be,” she said. The filly, out of the Rainbow Quest mare Flawlessly, is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Ombre Legere and the Group 1-placed mare Flawly, who produced Prix du Jockey-Club runner-up Best Name. She was bred by Stefano Luciani of Azienda Agricola Luciani, who also bred the highest priced foal at last year's November Foal Sale, a Galileo colt out of Captivating. The Irish National Stud, which consigned the Galileo colt last year, will act as consignor. Luciani said: “The filly really looks like her sire – in fact the similarity is incredible. She's a good-bodied filly with plenty of bone and exudes quality.” George Washington was a four-time Group 1 winner, having also won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, the National Stakes and the Phoenix Stakes, as well as the Group 2 Railway Stakes. A half-brother to multiple Group 1 winner Grandera, now at stud in Japan, he briefly commanded a fee of 60,000 euros before he was pulled from studin March. Goffs chief executive Henry Beeby said: “Goffs is honoured to have the opportunity to sell this truly unique filly and we are confident of achieving another excellent result for her breeders, who have been great patrons of the Irish breedingindustry for many years.” |
