betting the races on Saturday night, it seemed pretty chalkey.

They give you huge fields, but the cream seems to rise to the top there. We'll find out again this Sat night...

Not always...

Aston winning the Sprinters Stakes, Sans Adieu winning the Centuar (30/1), Koiuta winning the Victoria Mile (60/1), Lohengrin winning the Nakayama (at what, 17/1 or something?), Tokai in the Nikkei Shinshun Hai, Jolly Dance in the Sankeisports whatever the rest of the name was , even Eye Popper (yea!) winning the Hanshin had a pretty nice payout.

On Kandidate, Jack and SC.....

My home track, Canterbury Park, offered the last 3 races at Kyoto last Sutrday night, and will be doing it again this Saturday. In the 3 races they showed last Sat, it was pretty chalky in all 3. But I do love the field sizes.

Dylan Thomas Out of Japan Cup
by Blood-Horse Staff
(Edited Japan Racing Association release)

Dylan Thomas, who was recently named Cartier Horse of the Year and top older horse in Europe, is no longer a contender for the Nov. 25 Japan Cup (Jpn-I) due to not testing negative for Equine Viral Arteritis.

A series of examinations conducted on Dylan Thomas as a part of the regular quarantine procedure at the import quarantine at Shiroi Quarantine Station revealed non-negative results.

Consequently, the 4-year-old Irish-bred son of Danehill was not approved to enter into Japan as a part of the sanitation provision established between Ireland and Japan.

Though not confirmed, it is estimated that EVA vaccination prior to entry into Japan may have caused his elevated antibody level. Dylan Thomas’s case does not have any effect to other overseas horses in the quarantine facility, and the horses undergoing quarantine at Shiroi are on schedule to move to Tokyo Racecourse Nov. 20.

The sanitation provision between Ireland and Japan for the equine viral arteritis requires the horse, prior to departure from Japan, to be stabled at an EVA-free facility for 60 consecutive days. He must not show irregular symptoms and must produce a negative antibody examination result within 30 days. During quarantine in Japan, the horse must be free from symptoms and approved negative from antibody examination.

EVA is designated as a notable infectious disease by the Act on Domestic Animal Infectious Diseases Control. In its history of horse racing, Japan has so far been free from the disease.

Dylan Thomas is scheduled to stand the 2008 breeding season at John Magnier and partners' Coolmore Stud in Ireland. The season officially starts in February.

He didn't test negative?

Non-negative results?

So, that means positive results, right? Why didn't they just say he tested positive.

Glad he isn't running really, the horse would be exhausted after his long season. Don't think he would have had much of a chance.

I know, I've never thought this was a good idea. He's gotta be exhausted.

Hope he's okay.

Wonder if AOB will send him to HK or if that's it.

There's a bit about HK in the article.....

I hope it's Ryan, because he gets on with the horse so well. Papal is a tricky customer. He is what we call a 'thinker'. He is a very intelligent horse, and many of the intelligent ones often fail as racehorses

Mick (Kinane) is likely to be over there though, i imagine. There is every chance he could be called to take the ride if he doesn't have a mount in the race already.

I wonder how do you call those horses that win races (as Invasor). I think a horse with the habilites and blood roots is a winner when he got a well riding.

Moore thrilled with prime Kandidate

by Nicholas Godfrey

RYAN MOORE was delighted with Kandidate on Wednesday as he put the finishing touches on the five-year-old for Saturday's Japan Cup Dirt with his final piece of fast work for the £1.2million contest.

“The horse is in good form and he looks very happy,” reported Moore after partnering the horse at a decent clip around one lap of the dirt track at Tokyo racecourse.

“Since his workload has been pretty light after his arrival in Japan, I wanted to give him a good gallop. Today is the last time we'll do any fast work with him.

“The dirt here is different fromthe dirt in other countries but it's not a problem,” added the rider.

“The atmosphere is great and I myself am enjoying it.”

Kandidate is joined by another well-travelled British contender in the Gerard Butler-trained Jack Sullivan, who breezed on Wednesday. “He's doing good and is very strong,” said Butler's representative Andrew Morris.

Kandidate and Jack Sullivan are both likely to start as outsiders in the Japan Cup Dirt against a big field featuring the best of the domestic dirt runners plus US Grade 1 winner Student Council.

The European visitors for Sunday's main event, the Japan Cup itself, have now left quarantine - with the notable exception, of course, of Dylan Thomas.

Moore rides Papal Bull for Sir Michael Stoute, who is reportedly in great shape for the £2.4m event. “Everything has gone right,” said Stoute's spokesman.

“We can see that he's regained his weight - he's levelled off. We always gallop him two days before the race so we won't do any fast work tomorrow.”

The Mick Channon-trained Halicarnassus, the mount of Darryll Holland, has also shrugged of the exertions of his flight to Japan. “Everything is going smoothly since our arrival,” said the trainer's representative.

“He's been eating well and drinking well and his weight hasn't changed. He's a laid-back horse and a good traveller, which is an important factor.”

In the absence of Dylan Thomas, the final European challenger is Germany's Arc sixth Saddex. “I think it's too bad we can't race against Dylan Thomas,” said jockey Torsten Mundry. “Though to be honest, his withdrawal gives us a bigger chance to win. Unlike the Arc, we always thought the Japan Cup's stronger pace would suit Saddex.”

In the reformed market following the withdrawal of Dylan Thomas, leading home-trained contender Meisho Samson remains favourite.

Is That the report?: "Moore rides Papal Bull for Sir Michael Stoute, who is reportedly in great shape for the £2.4m event. “Everything has gone right,” said Stoute's spokesman."
