Not quite sure what you meant here, but I hope you realize my posting of the picture from the Richard Dreyfuss movie was obviously tongue in cheek.

Question is, what should be my bet(s) of choice? I'm thinkin straight win, pick 3's. I'm gonna budget myself to $200 a day max. Am I crazy or would you consider doing the same thing? Have any of you done something similar?

Sorry to hear about your job, here are few avenues you can try:

1. play the stock market, short the following : cme, gs, ice, aapl, nvr, rtp, & pot.

2. or buy the following week before the earning call on a down day, i mean when market loses 200 or more points: v, ma, goog, bidu, tnh, wmt & mcd.

3. buy euros, dollar will lose value as the debts mount.

4. handicapping seems to pick a winner rather than make money, you wanna make money, pick losers and hope they hit... there you go, priceless handicapping advice.

I'm on the side of always think what you can afford to lose, rather than how much you can win. Sorry to hear about the job lost, my advice is take a few weeks off to sort out your thoughts, relax and then formulate a plan on finding employment, UI will not last forever.

Buy an entry into a high-dollar handicapping tournament. You might get lucky and take down the top prize, or one of the lesser prizes. You have a better chance doing that than trying to make a living handicapping on two hundred bucks a day.

I guess the only things that matter are: 1) Do you have something you can fall back on if you go broke? 2)How confident are you in your skills at handicapping & ticket construction? For example, with my skills at this game, I would be better off becoming a professional lottery player.

Well, my only advice is to use people's fear to your own advantage. People don't generally want to be out of a p4 after the 1st leg. So, they tend to use like 3 horses in the 1st leg(often the most likely 3 horses.)They won't try to lean up there. That will often turn a $20 late pick 3 ticket into a $60 late pick 4 ticket. The other thing they will do is avoid the pick 4, and just bet a late pick 3. This is due to fear of that 1st leg pick 4 loss. So, my advice is to look for pick 4 plays where you like a single in the 1st leg. That's important. There a lot of people who's preferred horse in that late pick 4 yesterday at HWD was the 2nd fav that won the first leg. They didn't trust it(cuz scared of being out after one leg.) So, they put $20 into the late pick 3, and hit for $134. They know they should of had over $600 for that late p4, and they know they could of done it for $20. Right? The most obvious horses won the last 2 races. The winner of the 2nd leg was like the 5th deep horse for most people. If you liked the Talamo horse in the 1st leg, then it's a $20 p4 bet. So, look for p4 bets where the 1st leg has a horse you can single. Then you can go 5x2x2 etc. the rest of the way.

this is very true. the first leg of any multileg wager is the most critical for this psychological reason.

there is a way to win. however it requires the discipline that no gambler has. the ability to limit your betting.

the answer is: you select one race for the day and go for it!

Ok if anyone cares I read all the advice and decided on Preakness day to start, try again on Sunday and then see how it felt.

I can't go like that. I was a nervous wreck and could not stop thinking about my bills, etc.. I'll gamble a little on the weekends but I need to focus my energy on the job, deciding on if I am going to move to Florida or stay put, etc..

Thanks for the advice everyone.

That'll be $50 to everyone and we'll see you next week for a follow up.

Can anyone who contributed advice get the $50? Kind of like the townspeople in the movie "Funny Farm".
