Very interesting Merlinsky.. because its still a classic and if you own a good one you want to win the classic. pletcher would very muched be biased towards the horse with the crown chance.

I guess if I owned a horse in that situation I would discuss the scenario with Pletcher. I am sure that Pletcher would be in a tough spot because if his B horse beats the crown hopefull, the owner of the Derby/Preakness winner would no doubt be bitter towards Pletcher (especially if the horse runs a close second to the B starter).

If I owned the "B" horse, I think I would switch the horse to a new trainer for the Belmont only, to take the pressure off Pletcher.

I only wish I could be in this situation one day!

If I knew my horse could possibly beat the other with the right set up and something so important as the Triple Crown is on the line, what do I do? Should you really feel obligated to switch trainers when you've been with Todd the whole time and he knows your horse's weaknesses anyway?

I'm sure there are plenty of circumstances where a jockey's told to try hard but not bust a gut because they want the other one to win out. In Man o'War's time didn't they even have sort of a call if both horses owned by one person were in a position to win, the owner could semi-officially indicate who they wanted to come in first? This wouldn't be the same scenario if it were different owners, same trainer, but I just thought of that. I think I read it in Dorothy Ours' book.
Most of Todd's owners are big time clients. I could not see him exploiting one of their horses to help him win the TC for another owner. Obviously if the horses have the same owner I would expect they would skip the race or use their horse to setup the other but with different owners I can't see Todd risking his stock to help a horse win the Triple Crown.

I can. The unique situation that he is in is that there is no one owner that could cause him any real pain by leaving. If he gets in position to win the Triple Crown, I can bet you that his own horse wont be the one that beats him.

Really the question is how to couple the entries in the case of him training every horse in the race?

Really? You think he'd risk a Coolmore, Winstar, or Dogwood horse to help one of the others win a Triple Crown? Doesn't seem very Pletcher-like to me.

To win the Triple Crown I think he'd risk his wife! The thing is that these owners are so brainwashed that they would not fire him if he was sleeping with all of their wives and kicking their dogs. (not that he would do those things)

I really think that Rags To Riches is a very exciting prospect for the Derby. I think she must first prove that she belongs there but, in my mind, she is the most exciting filly prospect since Winning Colors. Her style and ability to overcome wide and trobled trips makes her the kind of horse that fits the profile of a Derby winner. I wish I cound find somewhere to get down on the Tabor owned Oaks-Derby double right now. I have doubts that they will put Rags To Riches in the Derby with all of the other exciting prospects that the owner already has. I have her at 75-1 to win the derby......

I don't think it is the trainer. I think if she were owned by anyone but Tabor or Reddam who have the likely favorites in the SA Derby that she would go in that race for sure.
