I'm doing a Lukas/Zito box. I'll throw in Baffert for the tri, since these trainers have the most derby wins.

16) POTN

6) Friesan Fire

11) Chocolate Candy

12) General Quarters

good-luck

Jerry Hollendorfer is from my home town for all intents and purposes, and his home track is here in my back yard.

Darn right Chocolate Candy will be a sentimental fave for me.

That said, I'm really sort of surprised how much support he's getting here for hitting the board.

I'll likely have him in a couple combos, but I truly think he's gonna have to have an amazingly good trip and a bunch of other horses have an amazingly poor trip for Hollendorfer to get a nice Derby finish this time.

I don't like the fact that Smith is on Chocolate Candy for the first time.

I like less that he's had a heavy dose of 6 and 7 horse fields he's been competing against in his last five races. If a horse could say "WTF??", I think that's what he might be saying when the gates open with 20 on Saturday.

Trainer be damned, I Want Revenge. Boxed with POTN in the exacta and both wheeled over Choclate Candy, Musket Man and Desert Party a few ways. All of the above in the Derby Double.

You know... I hit the biggest tri pay-off years ago, just on the account that I couldn't throw Lukas out because well, he was "Lukas"....(It was the year Charismatic won the Derby...) That thinking paid off handsomely that year and am wondering if I dare toss him this year.

It's been ten years since I left for Louisville without a good feel of who I was going to bet. I'm leaning toward POTN, but then I ask myself how I can play the second choice who is slow on figures and never run on dirt.

If you have some substantial reason to believe he'll improve on dirt. Do you?

Let's see what his price is first.

The muddy track will change my mind...

Going to go with General Quarters and Fresian Fire if this is the case.

So I know we constantly make fun of the folks who talk about Derby weather, but we're 48 hours out and I see a 60 percent chance of rain. Not good.

The difference being that Charismatic was in a crop that was only surpassed in awfulness by last years crop. This year there are at least a few good horses still being aimed for the race Saturday.

The Lukas horse is hopeless.

Don't leave him out. Breeding has to mean something.

Friesan Fire...4/27 work sold me!
Papa Clem...seems to be peaking now!
Chocolate Candy...like the switch to Smith, nice work over surface!
