I most whole heartedly agree, and I always hope that someone loved them and let them know they were a special horse.

This thread is much to busy lately. More sad news
Gruffles and Unrestricted today in the 5th at Belmont in a very horrible spill.

Somedays I'll have so many workout notifications to look at and i'll skim the "good" horses but pause on the claimers, on my favorite claimers, cause they're the ones who are constant reminders... they're the heart and soul of racing.

Khyber Pass wouldn't be considered a "good" horse by most. I doubt he had a lot of fans, doubt a lot of people followed him.

He didn't win much.

When he ran he had that spark though.... a little claimer with the determination of a champion. He radiated heart and he tried so hard every time..... every time.

Someone on another forum watched as he died at Fairplex, while or after being unsaddled. Okay that was hard to even write those words.

Maybe there's somewhere when he and Go Bye Bye, Capecloakanddagger, Ride and Shine and All the Boys are winning races now and free of pain.

Rest in peace, special boy. You were loved and I will never forget you.
I wholeheartedly agree, and thank you for taking the time to remember them.

Looks like Electric Light in the 8th at Belmont will join the Angels.
Anyone have info?
He broke down in the stretch very badly.

Chart just reads broke down in stretch, nothing about euthanasia or vanned off, but I can't believe he could make it, it was horrible.

In for a 50,000.00 claim, no one claimed him.

Durkin never said anything, and TVG acted like it didn't even happen....

Like MMSC said, he died (I think) trying, at least we will notice.

I appreciate it. It's sad reading that about him. He certainly meant the world to Joe and Peggy as you can tell from your link. Thanks again.

Thanks Cajun, I could definetly never repay him for all he did. Things like this are what make this sport like no other, he was a horse with a front right leg so crooked we didn't think he would be able to run due to soundness problems. 50 races later he never missed a start due to soundness issues and then this happens within 6 months after he was retired. Tough for sure.

RIP...

As crazy as it sounds, why do they put these horses down so quickly before giving them a chance at another life? Sounds like sour grapes to me...

Just because a horse ends up foundering, doesn't mean his/her life should be over before given a chance. Or am I wrong?

Ptarmigan Ridge.

by Gordon Brown
.

LINDA PERRATT'S veteran sprinter Ptarmigan Ridge has been put down after suffering a serious accident on the gallops over the weekend.

The 11-year-old fractured his off-fore when working at Ayr racecourse on Saturday morning, while his regular rider Derek Loy broke a collarbone and suffered a damaged lung in the incident.

“It all happened very quickly on a bend and was truly awful,” Perratt said.

“We did all we could to save him but in the end the injury was just too bad. Derek is out of hospital and part of his lung was separated as well as the damage to his collarbone.

“Ptarmigan Ridge was a real favourite in the yard and he's been a pleasure to have had here this past nine and a half years. He won a couple of nice sprints at Haydock as well asone at Chester and several more at Ayr and Catterick. “He took us to some nice places as we also ran him at Epsom, Ascot and York and the plan was to run him again on consecutive days at Ayr later this week, including in the race which he wonlast year. He was holding his form well and was just touched off by a neck at Musselburgh four runs ago - he was a horse who loved being in training.”

Ptarmigan Ridge was owned and bred by Heather Galbraith at Mauchline, just 12 miles from Ayr and that is the scene of his final resting place.

“He's buried in the paddock area near where he was foaled,” Perratt added.

“It's such a shame this has happened as he was still an entire and could have had an enjoyable retirement as a stallion.”

Ptarmigan Ridge won eight of his 89 starts and earned nearly £118,000 in win and place prize-money. He raced almost exclusively at the minimum trip in recent seasons although he did show some form at 6f.
