You really liked that Derby more than the Preakness?

Oh treasure that memory forever.
Thank you for sharing that with us.
Sorry I am very sentimental.

Yes, I did... I was 9 years old and didn't watch the Preakness that year, so I would have to say that I liked the derby better.

It was Dec 7th 2002 and it was the first time I went to the track since I turned 21. I had always went with my father but this was the first I went alone. It was Great State Challenge Day at Sam Houston Race Park and did not score a single ticket but I had my eye on the #4 horse in the last race at Hollywood Park. I placed a $100 win bet on this 5-1 morning line horse and left before the card had finished. It was my largest bet to date and I could not wait to go home to check the results cause I was too excited to watch it there. With few miles to reach home I checked my ticket and kissed it for goodluck. On inspecting the ticket I noticed the bet was for the 8th race and not the 9th race as I intended. I was too far from the track to change the ticket but I checked the program to see if the #4 horse had any chance to win the 8th race. He was 30-1 M/L and I was ticked off at myself for not checking my ticket right after I placed it. The 8th race was the Vernon O. Underwood stakes and it developed to be a 4 horse speed duel that collapsed and my 4 horse wins it at 52-1 and I screamed my head off when I fould out that I won $5280. The horse was named DEBONAIR JOE. I was so happy that this horse came back this year to win two races at Del Mar.

Java Gold winning the 1987 Travers against the deepest 3yo field I've ever seen. U had:

Alysheba-Derby, Preakness, Blue Grass, Super Derby
Bet Twice-Belmont, Haskell, Fountain of Youth
Temperate Sil-SA Derby, Swaps
Gone West-Withers, Dwyer, Gotham
Gulch-Wood Memorial, Bay Shore, Met Mile
Polish Navy-Jim Dandy, Woodward
Cryptoclearance-Everglades, Pegasus, Florida Derby

The bold races were the grade ones. In addition to these horses having won all of those races, most of them finished 2nd and 3rd in the races they didn't win. It was the most incredible field I've ever seen for a race and Java Gold destroyed them. To this day, I still rank him as one of the two best horses I've seen since I started watching the sport in 1986.
