I'm disappointed in the layoff. I don't think Chrome is the type of horse that benefits from them. But then again I could be wrong. We'll see. |

![]() I think after the Belmont and considering his rant, Coburn and Co. decided that they'll be danged if they're gonna take a seasoned horse against fresh ones again and that they were gonna be the fresh horse next time. A complete lack of understanding of how some horses need freshening like that and some thrive on work. Sherman's just doing the best he can with these guys. I do find it doubtful he'd have chosen this route (prep #/spacing) for Chrome on his own, but I also doubt he'd admit that. Wouldn't wanna lose face or insult the owners.

![]() Japanese are trying pretty hard to buy him.
“But you have to understand the interest in him right now. People from Japan were here the other day (at Los Alamitos), and they want him bad. As a stud, he’s very valuable, but it’s up to the owners. If the money’s there, you have to think they’ll sell him.” http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2014/.../#article-copy |

from Crist's article: "Since 1980, six of the eight horses in his exact position – returning to the races after winning the Derby and Preakness and losing the Belmont – have lost their comeback race, most of them at short odds. " This apparently arbitrary 1980 cutoff made me immediately think that the next one back would have been bad for the thesis. Sure enough, in 1979 Spectacular Bid came back to win the Haskell. Granted, he didn't add much to the ROI of the "return" bet. I couldn't find out how Cananero II, the one before Spectacular Bid, had fared in his return. --Dunbar

![]() I don't see Untapable losing.
I'm less certain of California Chrome's chances. Bayern having to endure pressure from C J's Awesome and possibly Protonico may not be signifcant, but I also could see Espinoza on Chrome deciding he should duel with Bayern rather than let him slip away. |

![]() He grabbed a quarter, pretty nastily from the picture I saw, but it's not like I spend my day looking at grabbed quarters. Maybe they look worse than they are. What foot injury beyond that? It takes 3.5 months to get back from grabbing a quarter? One prep in 5 months because of that? Usually we see this kind of break when the horse has something wrong with them or is stamped 'fragile,' but doesn't seem like there was anything. It's just weird and I don't like it. I guess leave it to Art to get the job done, but still... bothersome. |

I do know that the horse took his first break ever after the Belmont, with a fair amount of racing beforehand. 13 starts so far, which is more than many horses accomplish thru their entire career-and all those by mid june at 3. I'm not going to question a break after the racing he's done. I remember they almost skipped the santa anita derby because he didn't need it, and they wanted to give him a bit of a break. they changed their mind and ran him. the horse had a very busy early 2014. just glad he's still racing. after slew lost the swaps, he didn't run again all year.
