As someone who rarely plays tournaments, I'm curious how much money on average do most qualifiers spend during a year in their attempts to qualify?

$25K is ridiculous, but do most people spend $2 or $3K in contest fees to attempt to get in?

That's a difficult question to answer because of the multitude of contest structures and also the weighted entry fees based on the number of seats seeded.
Personally I think the best road is through the Horse Players Qualify - Player's Challenge. Last year there were only 38 finalists, and 26 of them had already qualified so there were 6 NHC seats to be divided between 12 finalists - literally every other person got a seat.

This year they are running it earlier to get more finalists, tripling the prize money, but reducing the seats to 3, which still will be an amazing ratio.

135.00 to enter a qualifier and usually the top 2,3, or 4 win entry to the Player's Challenge (depending on the # of entries, 1 per 50 entrants, capped @ 200 entrants)
