I think when you die you are just plain dead, and that is too difficult of a concept for people to grasp so they believe in heaven.
I think a lot of people are terrified about ceasing to exist, so they need to persuade themselves there's something after. Who knows? Well, all of us will, eventually.

I'm with you on Hell being a ridiculous concept. If a religion needs to threaten you with eternal punishment to get you to follow it, what does that say about the appeal of the religion on its own merits?
