Backtalk, with jockey Miguel Mena aboard, breezed five furlongs in 1:01 3/5 over the Polytrack at Keeneland. Working in company with Sangre Frio, the son of Smarty Jones was timed in fractions of :12 2/5, :25, :37 4/5, and :50 2/5 while galloping out six furlongs in 1:14 4/5.

Make Music for Me, a son of Bernstein , breezed five furlongs in 1:02 2/5 over a Churchill Downs track labeled "good," with fractions of :12 2/5, :24 4/5, :37 3/5, and :49 2/5. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:18.

So during which one of these do they have the Woodford running in the background, but don't actually air it? That's awesome TV coverage.

Actually, it's not. The networks have typically owned the rights to the Woodford and Manhattan but elected not to show them, resulting in a TV blackout for the races. If they aren't going to show them, don't buy the rights to the races and let someone else air them.

The networks dont show them because they don't want casual fans to tune out as soon as the Woodford and Manhattan are over because they think they just watched the Derby or Belmont. And those fluff pieces they show instead keep people watching. And they don't let other networks show the races becasue they want all the viewers watchng their broadcast.

And how does this weak explanation, even if correct, make the complaint "tired"? Damn those racing fans/bettors who actually want to watch two of the typically six most important grass races contested in North America on an annual basis.

That explaination does sound correct. It fits what the suits at the networks want to do.

But it still sucks.

Thats a lame excuse because they show other races on the Derby card. The casual fans wouldn't know th Humana Distaff from the KY Derby.
