Everything nowadays is about speed and new records. That is why it is so hard to keep horses sound on the California racetracks, and the California racetracks have become speedways. The peak speed period for California tracks was from the mid-1950s through the late 1960's.

They've been slowed since then ... sometimes just a little bit and sometimes quite considerably.
