NOT free credit report dot com. that is a business trying to sell you stuff. at any rate, go on the first of january, or your birthday, an easy date to remember. or when you file taxes, which is when i check mine. it's a good idea to check once a year so that any funny business can be cleared up, any mistakes, etc. if you feel once a year isn't enough-perhaps you should look into lifelock or some such thing. but for most, unless you've had compromised info, once a year is plenty.
also, if you ever file for credit and are turned down, you can get all three for free-but i don't recommend waiting til then.

or instead of taking all 3 at once, just request one in january, another in may and the 3rd in september.

you're entitled to 1 report from each credit agency/year. if you stagger the requests you have a better chance of catching a mistake or fraudulent activity earlier than if you order all 3 at once.
