Claimer breaks down, euthanized

Characteristic, a 6-year-old horse trained by Sadler, was euthanized on Thursday after suffering sesamoid injuries during the running of the fifth race for $32,000 claimers.

Characteristic is the second horse to be euthanized since Santa Anita's main track underwent a five-day renovation earlier this month to add polymers and fibers from the Australian synthetic surface Pro-Ride to the existing Cushion Track brand surface. The track lost 11 days of racing in January and early February after the synthetic track failed to drain following major rainstorms.

His name was Cimyla and he deserves more than this litle blurb on DRF.

He'd won at Wolverhampton, at Lingfield, Sandown and Nottingham.

Not a worldbeater, not a superstar, but a nice horse with heart who was fun to follow.

He tried.

He'll be missed.

Hope he didn't suffer.

Cimyla, 7, euthanized after workout

Cimyla, a 7-year-old gelding winless in five starts in this country, was euthanized on Saturday after suffering injuries at the conclusion of a workout. The injury happened near the finish line after a seven-furlong workout.

Trainer Ben Cecil said that Cimyla suffered a severe sesamoid injury.

Cimyla is the third horse to be euthanized at Santa Anita since the synthetic main track was resurfaced earlier this month in an effort to improve drainage. Cecil was quick to say the racetrack was not at fault.

"I don't blame the racetrack," he said. "I think the racetrack is very good. You're going to get injuries from time to time."

Go Malabar Gold, ridden by Perez, broke both front legs and fell shortly after passing the quarter pole in the $4,000 claiming race at six furlongs. Neither Luxurious Flight, ridden by Duran, nor Siberian Wine, ridden by Bisono, could avoid the fallen horse, and both dumped their rider.

Perez suffered bruising on both shoulders. Duran suffered a bruised knee, while Bisono suffered no apparent injuries. Go Malabar Gold was euthanized. The other two horses were unhurt.
