While Lori was still at the UofA, I noticed on a Derby glass in '05 that, at the time, 12 of the last 15 Derby winners (from '90 on) had 3 syllable names. Now, it is 14 for 17. The only exceptions are Grindstone, Fusaichi Pegasus, and Charismatic. These names have been one word (Unbridled, Monarchos, etc), two words (Smarty Jones, Sea Hero, Real Quiet, etc), and three words (Lil E Tee, Strike the Gold, etc). Ever since then, she and I and now some others in the RTIP tout this as the primary handicapping angle for the Derby - much to the disgust of others. Everyone knows the Derby is impossibly hard to 'cap, so it is nice to rely on something so simple.
