Giant's Causeway gone at 21

Can we assume he bred some mares this year? I know he had some sort of illness but not clear what (cancer? laminitis?). No announcements about missing the breeding season that I'm aware of and surely mare owners would know if a bunch of bookings were on hold or cancelled. There's an abbreviated crop from this year, right?
