Jeff Bridges has had a wonderful career from The Last Picture Show which if I'm not mistaken was his film debut? To films like Starman, The Fabulous Baker Boys(One of my favs), The Contender, The Fisher King. He did a film in 2004 that I would see if you haven't called " The Door In The Floor" where he plays a famous children's author named Ted Cole. His marriage has been strained by a tragedy, and he agrees to take on an apprentice for the summer. It's a very good film.
