There are always going to be problems with formats in tournaments that don't go on over long periods of time.

When I was 18 years old, I won a Penn National tournament, where you start with a mytical bankroll. I used some pretty slimy tactics to win it (outright pool manipulation) I basically forced everyone else in the tournament off a specific horse I liked, and bet my entire mytical bankroll on that horse. When that horse won, and he was far from a big price, there was a decisive swing in the standings which put me in 1st place going into the last race. In the last race, you could only bet 10% of your bankroll---and though I could have been run-down, I had made myself a prohibitve favorite to win it...and no one was able to catch me.

In that style tournament....it was better to be slimy than lucky or good.
You know what they say about Karma...
