This is a good read.

Breakage, the practice of rounding down (always down) payoffs to supposedly more-convenient dime increments, is, in fact, nothing but institutionalized theft from customers, with their rightful earnings directed to a slush fund usually split between the state and the track.

It even is a bit of a throwback piece, to the type of editorials you'd see in the DRF from the 1930's into the 1960's -- before the DRF altered course in the late 60's, lost its way, and became a pom-pom paper.

Obviously, nothing is going to be done about breakage, at any track, anywhere.

What Steve Crist calls "Institutionalized theft from customers" ... is what the 'Powers that be' would call 'money we need to stay afloat.'
