Why wouldn't they get $$$ if they make it to the playoffs? Those games would draw monster ratings. I think the royal treatment would be even higher for the teams to make the finals than it is for the BCS Title game. The only legit excuse I've heard is that it makes the regular season games less meaningful but I still disagree with that, there would be even more meaningful games because trying to crack the top 16 late in the year would become a big deal. Also, if you gave auto bids to the small conference winners you would be awarding the top two schools by giving them easy first round opponents so that would keep it meaningful to finish in the top two in the regular season.
