Default Dead Man Riding - Frank Hayes

Really bizzare.

"This ruling makes Frank Hayes the only jockey to win a race while deceased. In fact, it is the only time in sports history when a competition was won by a dead man. "

Amazing stuff ! Thanks for posting this.

What are the rules that they chose to let go ? Is it written that the jock must be alive. ? The horse carried the weight. I'll let it go at that without making any wiseguy witticisms.

Not sure if that's the right photo. I noticed on the site that it shows the same photo back in June of 2012 saying "British filly Meld, undefeated as a three-year-old in 1955, when she won the British Fillies Triple Crown

As a broodmare, Meld produced Charlottown, winner of the Epsom Derby in 1966"

So who knows.

The fact that he didn't fall off before the wire is just stunning!

Dorothy Ours clarified on FB that this is a myth, Frank Hayes died after winning the race, not during. Here's one link she posted:

http://fultonhistory.com/newspaper%2...20-%200358.PDF

She also says:
Quote:
According to the New York Times article published June 5, 1923 (the day after this race), "Hayes undoubtedly died as he brought his mount to a walk after passing the winning post..." In other words, he was alive throughout the race.
I'm glad for his sake that after all that work he put in (that probably caused his heart problem) he died after knowing he'd won.
