Default Jerry Bailey calls out Stew E.

Did I hear this wrong?:

Jerry Bailey saying we should have had two triple crown winners in the last 10 years if it were not for rides in front of the Nation.

I am almost positive I heard something similar to this. I immediately thought he was calling out Stewart Elliot. But I do not know the other jock he might be referring to. Did anyone else catch this on the telecast. I completely forgot about it, but when he stated this I immediately thought of Smarty Jones and... then I was not sure.

I would imagine the other would be Real Quiet when Kent made the early move. Don't know for sure though....

You are correct, he did say that had it not been for 2 bad rides we would have 2 Triple Crown Winners in the last 10 years.

pretty sure it was Real Quiet and KD he was talking about. But not sure he knocked the rider as much as gave examples of riders getting fooled by the track when they haven't ridden over it much (cause they aren't used to the size).

OOps just answered. I was not sure about the numbers but I knew I heard him say something similar. Thanks.

Then Elliot would have to be one of them.

yeah elliot definitely screwed up but he let himself be baited into an early speed duel--that Bailey started--and that cost him his race.

So Elliot and Kent D. had their horses poorly placed?
Is this what you get out of that statement?

Not trying to argue. Just remembered. Something to file away in my empty head.

Another thing that really cost Smarty was being ridden out in the Preakness and winning by 10 lengths. When you know you just had a hard race two weeks before and you know that you're going to have another hard race in 3 weeks, the smart thing to do is to take a nice tight hold of the horse and cruise home by 3-4 lengths. Why ask the horse and win by 10 lengths? That just knocks the horse out. In fairness to Elliot, there are very few jockeys that wouldn't have done the same thing that Elliot did. Most jockeys don't think about saving the horse for their next race. One jockey that was extremely smart and who would often times save the horse for their next race was Jerry Bailey. Do you remember Bailey's ride on Saint Liam in the Woodward? That was the horse's final race before the BC Classic. Bailey never asked the horse. He won under a strangle-hold. That is the way to do it. If you could win every race like that, your horse might last forever. I think of it like a lemon. You don't want to squeeze the lemon dry. When you ask a horse for all he's got, you're sqeezing all the juice out of the lemon.

So if Bailey is saying Stewie moved too soon or went too fast, what does that say about Rock Hard Ten's placement..either he admits he went too fast himself, or he admits his only purpose was to sabotage Smarty, which is what I believe happened.

Regardless of what he meant, I think Bailey is a tremendous addition to the broadcast. He may come across as being arrogant, but the guy earned the right to be arrogant by winning all of those Grade 1 races. The best thing about him is that he isn't afraid to share a controversial opinion or call somebody out. He may not be making friends, but he sure makes it interesting.

Don't get me wrong--I am a HUGE fan of Bailey and I love what he has brought to the broadcast, and I agree he absolutely sabotaged Smarty.

Bailey was not on Rock Hard Ten in the Belmont. Bailey was on Eddington. Solis rode RHT. If I remeber correctly, I believe that both RHT and Eddington pressured SJ early. By the way, they went much slower than Bob and John. Smarty went :48 3/5 in the Belmont. Bob and John went :47 1/5.

Pat,
I didn't hear the quote, but I was at both Real Quiet"s and Smarty's races.
Both were way different.
Kent D moved Real Quiet much too early. He thought others were coming at him much sooner than they did, and he used up his horse accordingly.
Stewart Elliot had all of them coming at him from the moment they made the first turn. The jocks took turns trying to rattle him. He fought off like four challenges, and tried to save something for that long stretch run.
That one was a "gang-up". When Smarty had been used up, Birdstone came.
Imho...Kent D showed a "stupid ride". Stew E had no choice.
Didn't RHT and Eddington take a shot too?

How many Triple Crowns has Bailey won? This would be like Andy Roddick criticizing Roger Federer in his bid to win the French Open yesterday. Bailey is being a schmuck. Of course he takes great pride in the Smarty defeat. He played a big factor in it.
