Default West Virginia Breeders Classic/Maryland Million

All Stakes races on Saturday night at Charles Town. This will be the first time I've missed it in a few years, but Dave Johnson's sure to do the race calling, and Travis Dunkleberger's sure to pick up a few nice wins. A little over a million bucks in prize money on the line.

The Classic field itself is filled with a a past winner in Speed Whiz, along with the usual WV suspects like Tienneman Square and Brigader. I'm going to go out on a limb and pick the 3YO Dunkleberger entry for the win.

Cherokee's Boy is the obvious choice in the Maryland Million, and should win in his final race before retiring to stud at the Stallion Station.

I know nobody cares, but for fans of mid-Atlantic racing, of course Rosie took a longshot to victory in the Maryland Million, and Speed Whiz repeated in the West Virginia Breeders Classic. Cherokee's Boy retires with a fifth place finish.

More posts to myself:

The show prices in the Maryland Million Classic were just outrageous.

I really liked Cherokee's Boy... it's a shame he didn't go out with a win.

I was ultra impressed with Ironton. It's amazing when Scott Lake claims these claims these older he puts huge early speed into them. Ironton ran them off their feet. When Ironton and Cherokee's Boy were both 2 Year olds we had a horse running in the MD. Million Nursery we got drilled by Cherokee's Boy who won it and Ironton was on the board

Not true.... I cared about that last line.

Too bad he didn't go out with a win.

He was a game and hard knocking warrior. He showed talent at age three, and they turned down offers to buy him then. They were rewarded with a horse who won a pile of money and always tried hard.
Its sad that he didn't win, but its a very happy thing that he will not be raced anymore at a level that would tarnish all that he has done, and he will now go to a line of work that I'm sure he will enjoy!!!
This horse won a million the HARD WAY. He didn't win it with a fluky performance in an overinflated purse race, he won it knocking out win after win. He was a true throwback to the horses that I watched in the infancy of my passion, back in the 80's. A true warrior. Great job by his connections the whole way through, right to the end.

Amen.

(Oh wait..... that was too short. Need to think of something else to say. Hmmm.....)

Happy retirement, gallant warrior.

14 stakes wins over a long career. I hope Dunkleberger finds himself another stakes horse like this.
