We've been trying to get Slick Wheelie on firm grass for some time now (needless to say, June's weather didn't help), and our trainer said that he had been training real well, so I honestly thought he'd outrun his odds (which I thought should have been about 15-1 to 20-1, given the field that he was in against). That being said, with Saratoga coming up, I'd have been happy if he hit the board, so a going away win at 47-1 with a final eighth in 11.3 was certainly way more than even I could have ever expected.

I always feel like I'm going to jinx myself when I tout one of our horses, but I will offer one handicapping tidbit for the future: I'm not a big fan of Wheelaway as a sire, but his horses frequently do move up on turf. I don't know what the ROI is for his first-time grass horses, but I'd bet that, 'Wheelie included, there have been at least four Wheelaways that won their grass debuts and paid over $40 (and I saw that Es Mia, scratched from yesterday's finale, had run second at 34-1 in her turf debut).

There was a Weaver firster who won at like 30/40-1 over the grass who was a Wheelaway firster going first on the turf long, and our family happen to be partners in Doc N Roll, a Wheelaway who won first time on the turf, and moved way up on the turf.
