Why is this?

Some ridiculous notion that they cause more injuries, which is most likely not true.

Germination was directive from TJC Safety Guideline committee.. The new rule limits the height of toe grabs while eliminating the use of turn downs, or any jars/stickers/bends, on front shoes.

Not to contest CJ's assertion, but studies have for an extended period suggested that grabs and stickers can contribute to breakdowns.

Where exactly are these studies? I know a friend of BTW's has a personal study that shows the opposite is true if anything else.

Germination?

Dr. Mary Scolay has talked about the studies on ATR.

I'll have to check out the archives. That said, I have seen a very in depth study that at the very least shows caulks don't cause more injuries, and quite possibly fewer. Maybe you should have that guy on ATR.

toe grabs change the angle of a horses leg and hoof-which of course affects how the hoof strikes the ground. look at a woman trying to run in heels for instance.. it's why most jurisdictions ban them, many think it does contribute to lameness and breakdowns. i'd imagine the same is thought about caulks.

Supposedly banned at the Fair Grounds too, can't find the article Bob Fortus wrote about it, but the La Racing commission meeting was right around Gustav. And the steriod ban is supposed to go into effect Jan. 1, but has to go through legislation and will be passed as emergency if not addressed in legislation.

The Jockey Club had it's Round Table Conference this past summer in Saratoga, as they always do. I don't know how many people here actually went. From the industry, you name 'em, they were there. The top names in the game. While there may not be a national czar or governing body, the closest you are going to get to the decision makers were there.

This topic had an entire session dedicated to it. Numerous studies, tests, white papers, etc. were done. Tremendous research was done. All of this material was presented and the results were definitive. Clear cut. The results were injuries, breakdowns, lameness, and so on. There were other statistics shown that were surprising, and at least one that I think was in fact distorted to some extent.

So, what does this mean? Personally, what I think it means is that there are probably more studies and research saying the exact opposite is true. Statistics don't lie . . . statisticians do! LOL.

Regardless, it's easy to sit here, absent of facts -- at least the known facts that are out there -- and say one way or the other is true, factual, or whatever you want to call it. I am sure there are two people that someone could respect tremendously, and each one could be on opposite sides of the fence.

Bottom line. It's a new rule. It is what it is.

Eric

It is just another example of changing something in a game that needs many other more important changes.

This would be like my house being obliterated by a tornado and I go out the next day order a new front door lock.

I'm thinking that a lot of SHOE handicappers will now change course and become NEW GELDING handicappers. Good luck with that.

This is a very important change - one of the most important single things that could be done for horse safety.

See PubMed and search away for studies.

It is totally overblown and the findings are highly questionable in my opinion. I would really love to hear Steve interview the guy with the opposite findings.

I would love to know how the original study was done considering that 99% of horses were using toe grabs.

??? Which particular study of the many are you talking about? And what makes you think the findings are questionable?
