These beyer’s numbers sometimes mystify me.
Commentator got a 120 for running a 1:50.23 9F race
Student Council got a 112 being 4 ¾ lengths behind.
I know this sounds like a math problem but
how fast did Student Council run this 9F race?

Should have been in 1:51.0 (or so)...

Andy, CJ or DougS can answer better, but at 9f, I believe each Beyer point is about a half length, so 120-112 appears to be a fair spread.

I thought that was a little high also, some of the spa numbers throughout the years seem to lean that way. When Left Bank won the Whitney I think he got a 121 and the 4th place horse got a 116...This is all by memory so...the numbers may be a little fuzzy.

The Commentator number, according to other figure makers I spoke to, was pretty straight forward. I thought it seemed a little low considering he ran 3 seconds faster than Ginger Punch.

It was a few points high if anything.

In Lawyers Ron's case last year - when he won the Whitney by 9 - he ran 2 4/5ths faster than Ginger Punch did in the race prior as well.

Where do you think Commentator would have finished in the Left Bank, Lido Palace, SC, MU Whitney given the assigned winning beyers are so close together.

I'm trying to remember the pace of that race that year, Commentator obviously is more effective with a moderate pace on the lead.

I think Commentator and Left Bank would have hurt each others chances and neither would have had much of a shot if both broke well.

I think people would be making a mistake getting too caught up in the speed figures for Whitney Day.

The track was not only a little wet - but maitenence was obviously done on it - and it was probably the type of track that some horses might have got over a little better than others.

If it was a straight forward day with a typical fast track - I'd have loved Student Council's race - it takes a very good horse to run a 112 Beyer while as uncomfortable as he seemed to be by taking so much dirt in his face. Nothing about his trip was especially real easy either.

I just think Student Council probably liked running over that funky surface a lot more than many of the also-rans.

It was a little like the all-time record figure BC Cup Juvenile of last year with a loose Zito loving the ground and running a monster number - an Asmussen horse in Pyro getting on track well late and being the only horse not to get totally blown off the tv screen..while the others seemed to all struggle.

Appreciate the thought process that went into your answer, I can't be as scientific with my opinion only to say that pace dynamics seems to determine how effective Commentator does in his races. He's won 2 Whitney's and that accords him respect in my mind, however I agree with the belief that he would have been hard pressed to win and even perhaps hit the board in the Left Bank run Whitney years ago.

true but he did beat St Liam in his first whitney who was no slouch! No matter how good or not so good Commentator is... it was an absolute steal to be able to have him at 9/2 (or did he go off at 4-1). Serling must have been nuttin himself with that price.

True 9/2 in retrospect was a nice price, problem is looking at the race before the gates opened who would have thought he would have been alone on the lead without being pushed...I'm sure many of us were left scratching our heads when the apparent speed battle didn't materialize. Bad for the Student Council backers...

true.. I wasnt going to bet the race.. until I saw 9/2. I just figured he was the class of the race.. why not take a stab with a price you will rarely get on the big guy.

Scott and Phil said it best on Saturday. If he was able set fractions slower than 46 for the half.. he would cruise.. Faster than 46 he would collapse.

It was worth a shot at the and on that day I dont think he would have lost even if Tastyville ran with him early.

I just wish I would have more guts to throw down real money on a horse.

Funky wet dirt VS synthetic.

One surface gets a lot of spread out fields at the wire and the other gets bunched up fields.

Someone could go race by race at comparable class levels in situations like that and say that Del Mar's last place finishers always seem to get big inflated numbers over Saratoga's.

For the sake of accuracy, Left Bank didn't wire the field, as a Jerkens runner blew out to a fast and big early lead before collapsing on the backside/far turn.
