![]() I a not sure who the guy is that they have in the TVG studio tonight , but they just had the 9th from Turf Paradise. A horse broke down (the #7) on the turn and another on stumbled over him (not sure of a # but it was a grey horse) causing the jockey to go flying. The track announcer missed it. Then the jerk in the studio mentions something about closers doing well at TP and doesn't say anything about the spill. I hope all involved are ok, but it certainly didn't look good. You would think that an all horse racing channel would at least mention horses and jockies that are involved in a spill. Then again it is TVG.

![]() From the Big M website:
Jockey Navin Mangalee has been released from Hackensack University Medical Center with only minor injuries following a racing accident on Thursday night at the Meadowlands. Mangalee was unseated when his mount Iwoman stumbled at the start of the sixth race. |

![]() I don't contribute to this list very often (hardly ever, as a amatter of fact), but I also would LOVE to know why TVG almost virtually ignores breakdowns in its coverage of racing. I believe they owe it to concerned viewers to fill us in on the status of the jockeys and horses............. Pretending that nothing serious has happened to the animal is particularly troubling. Do they think that ignoring what has obviously happened will somehow fool the knowledgeable viewer that terrible accidents can and do happen and should not be minimized? It is a serious lapse IMO. I don't think they should replay such moments on and on ad infinitum (many times in slow motion) as some major networks do, but puh-LEEZE give us all the courtesy of respecting our intelligence and allowing us to make our own judgements about what has happened.
In addition, to go on cheerfully preparing for and/or handicapping the next race at whatever racetrack without breaking stride (forgive the awful pun here) borders on the obscene. Eileen Weston bobwhite71 |

![]() Grrr!!! I hate when they neglect to mention the outcome of both rider and horse. Do they think we are so into the money that we are not concerned about the equine athelete? I have emailed TVG on several occassions asking to be given updates on both atheletes but they never answered. So I stopped trying......

I'm not positive we're talking about the same race, but if so, in the race I saw at Turf Paradise the TVG announcer did mention the spill. It just wasn't right after the race concluded. I remember them saying they would try to get more information as they could, but I had moved on to other things before I ever heard. |

![]() Its a tough line to tow as far as reporting on accidents during races. Personally if i see a horse pulling up, being eased or that has broken down or unseated the rider, i will always mention it. I think its a no doubter that whatever happens in the race should be reported.
The trickier spot is after the race/incident. The problem is, that reporting the truth is not always easy. There are many times that from the roof, you can see that a horse is on the track or has clearly broken down and probably will be put down. However i personally choose not to announce the horses condition over the PA if that is the case. I will usually just say the horse is down or standing well. As far as the rider, if there is no movement or very little i will usually state the rider is down and being attended to. If i can see movement or positive signals i will always report that info. Its a tough line to tow, simply because you want to get people as much information as possible, but you also dont want to be announcing and speculating on the horse and or jockeys condition when you just don tknow. Plus, even though many of us do realize that accidents and breakdowns are part of the game, many novice fans dont, and thus is it in the best interests of recruiting new fans to the game by telling them a beautiful animal will have to be put down? Curious to know what people think about this issue. |

http://www.turfparadise.com/ Here's a link to the chart. Bustopher Jr., (76-1 in a $3,500 claimer) is the horse who broke down. Allover Silver, at 78-1, fell trying to avoid. Junior Don B. was eased because of the spill, and then walked off. |

![]() I've been on the air at TVG when there have been spills. I know that their policy is to inform the viewers about the condition of both the horse and jockey as soon as possible. A call is always made immediately to the track where the incident occured. That is where sometimes the process slows as it's often difficult to get the right people you trust to be willing to disseminate information that is confirmed as accurate. Meanwhile the producers and talent have to continue presenting a live broadcast. People at TVG are just like the rest of us. Fans of the game with great care for the horses and jockeys at all times.
