Default Hypo Kentucky Derby ... 1950's Style

OK ... let's see if there was anything good around in the 1950's.

How about ...

... Tom Fool, Native Dancer, Nashua, Swaps, Summer Tan, Needles, Bold Ruler, Gallant Man, Iron Liege, Round Table, Hill Prince, High Gun, Tim Tam, Sword Dancer, First Landing?

Yup ... they'll do ... they'll do quite nicely.

Edit: Late entry to the field ... Nadir.

I'll take the Gray Ghost. That's a pretty competitive field though.

Some us enjoy racing history!
I'd go with Native Dancer here also!

I'd go with Native Dancer, although I think Needles would have given him a run for the money.

Old Goat,

Were you as good at telling people wouldn't win, back in what you probably believe were the "Glory Days".

Or did you gain this talent of telling us who wouldn't win with your age and wisdom?

Cajun, I'm friends with Dave Erb, the rider of Needles. Asked him who the best horse he ever rode was, and he said Swaps.

Errrrrrrrnnnnnntttttt !!! [sound of the "wrong" buzzer]

Gen. Duke never made the Derby ... or anything thereafter.

Tom Fool didn't either ... but he was 2YO champ and raced both before and after that year's Derby. Hey ... on that basis I should have also included Nadir ... I'll go back and add him.

Can't include the good Gen. ... or horses like Sir Gaylord, Hail To Reason, Hoist The Flag, Graustark, Boldnesian, etc. ... on any of these lists.

I wouldn't include Kelso, Buckpasser, or Wajima either because they weren't ready to rumble in May/June as 3YOS.

That's interesting, Randall... thanks for the info!

It'd be one hell of a race any way you look at, wouldn't it?

Intersesting that Swaps got mentioned. I'm not sure but don't two of his records still stand?
Anyway, when he was mated to Bimlette, No Robbery came along.
No Robbery and Clear Road gave us Going Straight, sire of Bourbon Slush,
the dam of my broodmare, Bourbon Streettune.

Gen. Duke was ready until Friday Derby Week until Harthill "decided" he should be scratched.. Having had a complete sophomore spring up to that day, I don't see why you wouldn't include Gen. Duke in the discussion. He would have won that Derby. And as the best horse ever bred by Calumet, (by farm employee acclamation), and 9f record holder at Gulfstream for more than 40 years, he certainly has a claim to be part of a '50's era Fantasy Derby.
