Wow, $200,000 is normally the breathe easy point yet we have 10 horses there already and that is not counting any fillies or any horses overseas that could potentially contest. Second place in the Wood won't get it done this year.

You need your money before the big 3 take place this year or you may need to race. However, assuming everyone is healthy I dont see the top 10 changing all the much.

This list is missing a few very interesting horses....hopefully they are entered in some stakes soon, because right now I'm liking Time Squared and a few others moreso than many on this list.

Makes sense to me. The Derby will be 3rd off a layoff and Carl is good with that angle. He doesnt have to worry about money so he can try to get his horse primed for the first Saturday in May. I sort of like the move.

I've got a strange vibe that Tiznow will sire the derby winner this year...

And nope, I don't think it will be Tiz Wonderful. I'm leaning more towards Liquidity or a colt named Tenfold. It's way too early, but it's fun to think about.

Oh yeah... IMO, Birdbirdistheword is the real deal, too. He's a nice looking colt.

Updated through 1/13/07. Notional's $90,000 payday in the G2 San Rafael allows him to crack the Top 20 and Hard Spun achieved his first graded stakes earnings with his $60,000 score in the G3 LeComte.

Note that Datrick (currently #15) is one that I'll personally go out on a limb (LOL) and say will not be in the starting gate for the Derby, considering he has trouble getting 6f let alone 10. His GSE's come from CD's late spring/early summer juvenile sprint races in 2006.

Contenders whose GSE's appear in green font earned the majority of their GSE's in turf races.

Please post any inaccuracies/problems/etc.!

you gotta watch out for those Woodbine horses coming to Gulfstream. They pop at huge odds (or at least did until I opened my big mouth)

I still say the Derby winner will come from Florida. He may not do his final prep there but he will have a race or two in Florida.

Street Sense is up against it. I don't know why the BC Juvenile winner even bothers to go to the Derby. I do but historically... no.

I think you can throw out all the Pletcher horses.

Now that I have eliminated half of the field, I will elimnate all that do not have a 3 syllable name.

Default Exhale

Monday 01/15/07
Santa Anita Race #3

EXHALE has been touted as a potential Santa Anita Derby colt, and his debut shows why. He broke slow from the rail, quickly worked into contention, dueled through a fast pace, and only weakened late to finish second behind Notional, the 8-5 favorite Saturday in the San Rafael Stakes. EXHALE missed a start at Hollywood Park because of a minor foot problem, but he worked well recently and would crush these if he reproduced his Oct. 21 debut. This is only his second start.

What was the extent of the foot problems?
