Unhappy Storm Flag Flying passes; Somali Lemonade & her Frankel foal lost

https://youtu.be/PAUZt28R2V0

A personal favorite. Just 16. Foal survived. Very sad and an awfully tough week at Claiborne.

Omg, steve. It just keeps piling on. Personal ensign was so amazing. just loved that horse, so of course her babies snd grandbabies were just so special.
What an awful month.
I was a huge fan of storm flag flying, just sick about this. I actually hesitate before going to bloodhorse, because it just seems to keep coming lately.

My Flag died a couple of years ago, also after foaling, didn't she?

Really sad news. ☹️

Yeah, a bernardini colt. Thats why, when people say retire them so they are no longer in danger, i think....what? No guarantees, which no one likes to acknowledge.

I was looking up info about Somali Lemonade when I came across her owner's NTRA profile and it was particularly depressing to read this part about her breeding/racing operation in hindsight:

Quote:
Forgason said that she has been "in and out" of the breeding and racing business for 25 years in partnerships and with her family, which includes sister Helen Alexander ... Somali Lemonade, headed to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf after her victory in the $150,000 Jessamine (G3) Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 13 in a "Win and You're In" event, is her only horse at this time. Somali Lemonade is trained by Matz ... The filly's bloodline traces all the way back on her dam side to King Ranch foundation mare Monade, who is her great-great, grand dam, and Too Chic is her grand dam and another foundation mare for the family. Too Chic's first foal was 1987 Ashland Stakes (G1) winner Chic Shirine and her second was Eclipse Award-winning Queena, who won the Masket (G1), the Ruffian (G1) and the Ballerina (G1) ... Somali Lemonade's dam, Chic Corine by Nuryev, has been owned at different times by Forgason, Alexander, and/or their mother. "It's a long story," she said. "I last bought her from my sister and mother and bred her. She has a colt, but I didn't want a colt so I sold him. I bred her again to Sky Mesa, and had another colt, so I sold him. Then I bred her again (to Lemon Drop Kid) and got my filly." Forgason will not be able to have any more off-spring from Chic Corine because she no longer owns the mare. "I gave her away," she said "She was older and I wanted her to have a good home so I found one."....Somali Lemonade is her first Breeders' Cup starter. "I am very excited. I have not had many good horses so having my filly in the Breeders' Cup is a huge thrill," she said. "Of course I am going to be there to see her run. I've had everything (bad) that can happen with horses, happen over the years so this is amazing. It's a miracle."

Chic Corine's been bred several times since Ms. Forgason gave her up to someone but only had live foals in 2010 and 2013. Her 2013 colt is Somali Lemonade's full brother, Martini Kid.

to go for such a champion
