This sounds bad after he won the year after, but IMO Artie Schiller had no business being the favorite in the Mile at Lone Star in 2004.

Yes, I checked the BC stats, and it was Araafa (finished 9th) that went off at 3/1. Gorella (finished 7th) was second favorite at 7/2.

I've never been more sure of a favorite losing a race as I was with Rubiano in the 1992 sprint.

What about Riboletta in the '00 Distaff? Left the gate at 2/5 and finished 7th in a 9-horse field. Spain was the winner at about 55/1 (whoo, I would have liked some of that action).

Riboletta was a desrving favorite. She got injured in the Distaff from what was reported.

Cuvee from the 12 hole at 8-5 I think, 1st time around 2 turns, and a son of Carson City was a solid toss in '03 as well. He finished last I believe.

Street Boss will be the M/L favorite, and I assume postt ime fave this year. No chance Lute or Fab Strike will be favored with the campaigns (or lack of campaigns) they've had this year, despite their reputations.

Cuvee was the favorite, 8-5, maybe 3-2, I don't remember. Although I tossed him, on paper he was appeared to be one of the strongest favorites; primarily because there were several horses where the connections just decided not to run. Well they don't run the race on paper. I think a lot of the expected contenders didn't run as expected in their final preps. Pletcher had Chapel Royal, but I am not sure if he any others in there, and he was pretty heavy in 2yo's that year. Zito as well.

Cuvee was coming off two impressive wins if I remember correctly, but he screamed sprinter and I don't think anyone was enthusiastic about him stretching out (Asmussen and Bailey). I don't remember who it was, but I think only one horse in the field had a two turn win. Anyway, Cuvee was last, but he got beat about 100 lengths and walked across the wire.

Action This Day had the two turn win. Possibly That's An Outrage, too. Both in maiden races at the Oak Tree meet.

You are right, I forgot about Action This Day. Actually, I was thinking about the Walden horse, Tiger Hunt. For whatever reason I forgot his name. I don't remember ATD breaking his maiden, nor the other horse. I would suspect Eurosilver might have been the favorite, co-favorite, strong second choice had Zito ran him.

EC ran in the Turf all 3 attempts and never went to post as the favorite.

... and ATD was not NEARLY the most impressive 2YO male winner that weekend at Santa Anita. Another colt broke his maiden that Friday in a huge performance that went on to do big things, can you name him?
